iPad dropped, now with red screen/background

I have an iPad 3 and I was freaking out because my brother dropped it while sitting on the ground and the iPad screen went black and wouldn't respond. Then he dropped it again because he was frustrated and the screen turned back on and the screen looked normal. The next day, there were blue lines in the background of the screen. We decided to try whacking the back near the earphone jack and it resulted in the black screen again. When it turned black, we dropped it again from about half a foot above the carpeted floor, and the blue lines reappeared. At this point, I didn't really mind if it got worse since it was broken already and I slapped the back of the iPad in the very center with the kind of force you use to give a high five to a close friend and IT WORKED!

Now the screen is normal, but more sensitive. A gentle whack will make the blue lines reappear. So basically, I'm saying that the whacking method WORKS FOR IPAD 3 also. This is amazing. 😀

I can't even believe I'm writing this, but hitting my iPad on the back WORKED! It fell off the couch, barely 2 feet, onto the carpeted floor. It went completely black. A hard reset did nothing. I saw this thread, figured I had nothing to lose, so I tried it and I'm so glad I did! This just happened an hour ago so I can't speak for a long term fix, but right now, I'm just happy I saw these replies and I'm hoping for the best. THANK YOU ALL!

Thanks. It works. My son dropped his ipad from the bed. The display won't wrok properly. I tapped from the back several times and it only improved first. With one more real strong slap things came back fully normal.

it worked!!! thank you so much, i tried everything, i dropped it from 4 feet up with the best case you can get onto carpet, and the screen went out. finally i tapped and tapped and took the siilver part of an ipad and beat by the port you plug it into the charger with and arund the speakker below the home button and finally it worked. i tried beating it, and did. my fingers are burning from hitting it so much. finally i got angry and threw it down, again, when i did, it went from a black screeen, to a screen with all kinds of colors. very odd. well i'd rather buy a new one than have that, so i threw it down again. (anger problems i suppose. lol) and when i did, it came back on perfect! now im paranoid to drop it, i guess it just taught me a lesson! i was balling my eyes out, and had a bad headache. well, now my day is made! scratch that, my year is made! thank you so much!!!!

Thanks for this post. Just had to add my story. I slapped the back quite a few times and it didn't work. I tried again later and no luck. Tried a third round slapping in different places. It was an hour between the first time I tried and the last, but sure enough it jogged everything back into place and the picture quality looks as good as new. Hope it stays fixed. Went to Genius Bar today and was about to pay $249 for iPad 2 replacement. Decided to think about it for a day to see if I wanted to just upgrade, anyway, glad I waited.

If you have the red screen, blurry icon, etc. Give this a try, and it may take a little longer than some others, but it's worth a shot....

One more testimony. It works!! A friends wife dropped her iPad and the display was grey with blue/Green lines running through it. Through iTunes you could see everything else was working. He slapped it several times on the back, nothing. Then he took a rubber mallet and tapped around the edges, nothing. Lastly he took the mallet and began tapping on the bottom. He was sort of "bouncing" it on the rubber mallet from the bottom in the area of the home button when, the screen flickered and then timed out. He turned it on again and tapped once in the same area and......poof!! The screen cleared and everything is back to normal. Hard to believe a rubber mallet can repair an iPad. But I saw it with my own two eyes. A little tip every iPad owner should know.

Yesterday I dropped my iPad 1 when I tried to open a door and it fell to the floor. When I tried to turn it on, nothing happened. The screen was black. I could see anything on the screen only when I pressed on-off button to do a power off. I thought I would have to buy a new one.

But when I saw this post and everyone said it worked for them, I tried it too. I slapped the back of it (quite hard) for 3 times before it's fixed. It works perfectly now.

Who would have thought using force could fix it !

Kids beat thing up...screen was distorted as previously described....more than a few good whacks did the trick!

Unbelievable.....after a month of this, was about to send out fro repair, but now, nope.

Thanks so much for sharing. My daughter dropped my brother's ipad and the screen turned red. I was dreading his reaction so i surf the net for possible solutions. I cam across this thread and tried a few whacks on the ipad's back and voila, the screen is back to normal...unbelievable solution but it really works!

Yes...just yesterday mine went green. I hit is several times and nothing. Then, I knocked it with my knee and VOILA! Picture is back!!!!!! Went to Apple store today and they told me I would need to buy a new one. This just saved me big time. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

I also would like to thank the person who gave the fix. At our school I had an Ipad with a red screen (fuzzy) and also a blue screen. I tapped each of the 4 edges vertically without it working. Then I hit it on the countertop with the camera end in my hand and the button end arcing down to the counter. Worked like a top and image looks great!.

I wonder if there isnt something in their that is mounted that the screen connects too that the screen can move away from when dropped that a good smack that way shifts back into place.

LCD screen connector must be partly disconnected after contusion

connector bracket is too loose

1. open the iPad as shown in the Youtube

2. be careful, do not destroy wifi cable on the right side of the Home button

3. reconnect LCD screen connector

4. bend the bracket closer

5. assemble iPad

6. press the necessary buttons

Runs like new.

Hi jim71, I have the iPad 2, and after it fell off my bed the screen has a red fuzzy flickering background. I have heard that the solution is to tap the back or the top of the iPad, but it doesn't seem to work. I wondered if I have left it too long after the drop to fix it. ( it has had the discolouration for about 4 weeks.) please reply, it's desperate!

Sameeo, you should try it more, my situation was even worse. After I fixed my iPad, the fuzzy background came back a few days latter, so I tapped it harder and longer, finally it went good again. So, now you just should try harder.

I tried everything, droping it on the floor straight up in its case, no rug/carpet. Slapping it a million times on the back. nothing. Then I began to think that i was an exception and it would not work with me. I finally got frustrated enough, I opened my hand really wide ... and gave 3 big hard firm slaps on the back. I'm telling you .. I slapped the S#!T out of the ipad!

SO... THanks and DON'T GIVE UP! SLAP IT UP YALL!
