iPad 2 Rear Camera and Display Quality

I purchased the new 16GB Wifi + 3G (verizon) iPad 2 from the apple store on Sunday. So far I am very happy with the device except for a few key items. I took a few pictures with the back camera and found that they were extremely blurry, like the pictures on my first blackberry phone. Is there a setting that I can change to make the pictures "high quality"? I am expecting the camera to function just like the less expensive iPhone 4's camera. My wife has the iPhone 4 camera and her pictures are amazing for a mobile phone. What is the megapixel count on the iPad rearfacing camera?

Secondly, I expected the screen resolution to be the ultra high retinal display that the iPhone 4 has and although the iPad isn't bad, it isn't as good as I expected it to be as I can see some pixelation on some fonts. Is there a setting change that I can make to get a better resolution?

No and No. The camera in the iPad is nowhere near the camera in the iPhone. You can look in the specs page, but the megapixel count is somewhere in the 1 MP range, compared to 4 MP in iPhone. It was never designed to be a photographic tool and really, when you think about it, it's actually awkward holding an iPad as a camera. The camera's in the iPad were engineered to work well enough with Facetime, which they do a fine job with.

The display is not the Retina display of iPhone 4 either. It would likely be too cost prohibitive. Personally, I think the screen is great, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks for your input. I agree that the camera wouldn't be something I would use on a trip or really to take pictures. You're right, as it is like holding up a notebook to take a photo. I suppose it is just for HD video capture, which I haven't tried yet. When I think about i like that, I suppose it doesn't really matter to me that the camera isn't the quality of the iPhone's camera. I was just hoping to have it because my wife is always capturing great pictures with her iPhone.

I wish the display was a higher resolution but I have to admit, with the glassy finish over top of it, it looks pretty darn good.

thanks for you comments. I'm looking forward to using the iPad it with facetime and skype. I hope skype comes out with an iPad app, the 2x zoom is only a temporary fix for the lack of real estate left over when using the skype iphone app on the iPad.

You're welcome. And here's a suggestion, get your own iPhone 4!! I take lot's of pics with my iPhone, then sync them over to my iPad. I agree about the Skype app. There are few apps I wonder why they have not come out with an iPad version. Skype is one. The other is Facebook (though after the recent announcement that iOS5 will have twitter natively installed, may offer some insight into that :-)

Ha ha ha, that's a good suggestion I actually have an Evo 4G Android phone which I'm happy with for the most part. The photos taken with this camera lack a little quality when compared to the iPhone 4's pictures, IMO. I have gotten so accustomed to the voice to text option made available by the Android keyboard that I couldn't think of losing that feature. I can't seem to find an iPhone keyboard replacement with voice input to replace the iPhone keyboard... this would make for a really profitable application. I also like that I can just drag mp3 files into my music folder from any computer and listen to them. I sort of reject the iTunes concept but I had better buck up and get used to it for my iPad.

There are many voice to text options on iPhone. One that I use often and have great success with (free by the way) is Dragon Dictation. Once you get used to iTunes, I think you'll find it has many outstanding features. Music flexibility is a great feature of iTunes. You can move mp3's over, you can download your entire CD collection and sync it over, etc. Anyway, good luck.......

Last question, is Dragon Dictation an app or does it replace your keyboard so that you can use the voice to text in any app? For example, I would like to use the voice to text when composing and email, entering a search term into the safari search or posting comments on Yelp/Twitter/Facebook/ect...

It is an app and not a replacement for the keyboard. But when you dicate using Dragon, you then have the option to load it to SMS, email, Facebook or Twitter or just save it as a copy. It's pretty cool for a free app. And while I found the keyboard to be odd at first, I've become quite the "gun" when typing now! Plus the more you use your iPad keypad, the transition to iPhone would be easy. In case you are wondering, I'm not an employee of Apple and I'm not trying to sell you an iPhone. I do however, think that since you have an iPad and your wife has an iPhone, if you also had an iPhone, you'd be able to manage all three devices in one iTunes account and easily share apps, music, books, etc.

Ha, I was wondering if you were sitting in an Apple store with an employee tag on your shirt. Just joking. I'm glad you like their products, it sounds like you have had good experiences with them. I tell you, Apple has really made other devices look bad when it comes to battery life (and of course design). My Evo batter is terrible even when I don't use it all day and have bluetooth, wifi, 4G and GPS turned off. The cell signal really drains the battery.

Thanks for your input and the suggestion on the dictation app.

I have a good friend who moans about the deplorable battery life of his Evo too. I of course, manage to let him know I typically only recharge my iPhone every 2nd or 3rd day. LOL 👿

Rear Camera: 960 x 720 pixels (0.7Mp), 72 x 72 DPI, Focal Length 3.85, 1/15, f/2.4, ISO 800

Front Camera:640 x 480 pixels (0.3Mp), 72 x 72 DPI, Focal Length 3.85, 1/15, f/2.4, ISO 2000
