Firmware for Power Mac G5 (PowerMac7,2 - PowerPC 970 - 2 GHz)

Hi,

I am new here :-). Having Power Mac G5 with processor speed 2 GHz and Mac OS X 10.5.8 installed (Leopard). Occasionally my fans went crazy and become very loud. My Boot ROM Version is very old - 5.0.7f0 and I have tried to upgrade it from Apple support pages.

First, on Apple web pages it is unclear what is latest firmware update for Power Mac G5/PowerMac7,2/2 GHz/dual processor/ from June 2003 and I tried to download and install firmware version 5.1.4 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL627 and during mounting procedure the system worns me "the image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system". Finally I get error message 60008

Can anybody help? Where to find latest firmware to resolve fan issue and speed up the Mac? Any link?

Thanks

Robert

5.1.4 is the latest for that machine.

Wondering if Leopard is the problem with the download not working, or maybe re-downloading might cure the problem.

I just downloaded the update and got the dmg to mount, albeit with the "may be damaged" warning and clicking "Open."

Here's probably why the warning comes up:

Verifying volume “Power Mac G5 Firmware Update”

Checking HFS Plus volume.

Checking Extents Overflow file.

Checking Catalog file.

Checking Catalog hierarchy.

Checking volume bitmap.

Checking volume information.

Volume Header needs minor repair

The volume The volume Mac G5 Firmware Update needs to be repaired.

Doesn't seem to be much of an issue, though.

Just tried-it doesnt work.

BTW tried with another HDD with Leopard installed, the same problem appears.

Is it possible that problem is due to the corrupted Apple firmware file?

Is there any other way to flash Boot ROM during startup /from USB, etc..../

With OS 10.5.8 Power Mac works fine but this periodical jet-plane sound from fans drives me completely crazy.....unbelievable sound in did.....

Yes same errors with mounting the dmg here, but can't install/test on my Quad. 😟

OK, you might try the following, using Disk Utility. It's a little involved but it may help.

From the Disk Utility window, click the Convert icon.

You should then get an Open dialog, which you should navigate to the "G5FirmwareUpdate.dmg" file. Give the new DMG file a different name.

Now, before selecting "Save" select "read/write" for the "Image Format" (for some reason this is the only one that really worder).

Then click "Save" and you will have a new image file. You may or may not want to then repeat the process with the new DMG file to get a read-only Image Format. You will find, for instance, that when you open the new image and go a "Verify Disk" on it, you will get a clean bill or health, as in the image below.

Now, whether that makes things happy, I have no real clue, as I already have the latest FW on the machine so an install won't start.

Anyway, something to try.
