damage from sweat

I am on my second 6th Generation Nano. The first was ruined by sweat (after only the second or third time running in hot Florida weather). They gave me a refurbished one...which failed after just one run in the heat. There was no rain. It was clipped to my waistband...because it has a built in clip and is supposedly made for running! When I brought the first one to the Apple store, they said they were not aware of this issue (hard to believe) and advised I wear it farther away from my body (AGAIN...IT HAS A CLIP FOR WEARING ON CLOTHING AND IS SUPPOSED TO BE CREATED FOR THIS ACTIVITY) I asked if there was a product available to protect against this problem and they were not aware of one (Watchbands for it are available in the store, but I do not want it on my wrist). I believe this to be a common problem (my wife and I had the same problem with the Shuffle...which also had a clip for clothing), but Apple employees (Genius...hmm?) claim to be oblivious to it!!!!!! Any solutions or similar experiences?

It isn't the sweat. The iPod electronics just can't handle the minor amount of shock from running. I had mine attached to the outside waistband of my shorts both times it died and it wasn't exposed to water or sweat there. I don't run with mine anymore - I broke out my old sansa mp3 player to take along on my runs and use my iPod for listening when I am stationary. The built-in pedometer is cool, but unless you can run more fluidly that I can the electronics in your iPod will eventually fail.

Nice product; good service; not for running.

I am on my 3rd nano 6 all replaced due to shorting out from sweat. Amazon have been very user friendly with the replacements. There is a design flaw in this unit compared to other generations, first the clip causes the charge openings to face sideways making it easier for sweat to reach the insides ans does the earpiece plug. the design should be like the previous versions which I have had no short out problems with. Calling Apple is useless as all they can say is they have never heard of this problem. Funny there are more than 600 post here. Allle nees to make a clear covering for this unit keeping sweat out. After all the purpose of this unit is to be used while working out therefore sweating. This time I am going to seran wrap the unit in an effort to protect it. I want another 5th generation but the cost has more than doubled since buying my first one.

I'm on # 3. No question it's dying from sweat. The design is all wrong and leads to sweat funneling into the headset hole. The only solution I can think of is to run with my 5th gen even though the hold button doesn't work! I just got my new one the other day and the first thing the genius did was check it for water damage. They know they have a problem but aren't addressing it. I have mac everything and this is the first time I've truly been POed at them.

I'm another victim of Ipod nano and exercise. I had a water-proof mp3 which after a lot of miles broke down 4 days before the marathon. I bought an Ipod nano not being so sure that it will be able so bear the same exercise rhythm that the waterproof one, and what happened... the same that I red at the other posts, just after the marathon, the next day that I run Ipod restarts at every moment, and never was in contact with sweat because the day was cold. I tried everything but nothing fixes it. Is like the machine became crazy, I have the language set in Spanish and the lady who speaks speak in German! And I switched off the option of speaking!.

I believe that this machine it is not for running but they don't tell you this, even more, they sell to you an adapter and a transmitter from Nike to record your exercises!!!!!!

I will go to the shop again and ask my money back.

Any prospective buyer of Ipod nano who desire to use it during the exercise: try to found another device. I recommend a more simple but water-proof one. And for the same price you can get 2.

I haven't had a Nano work properly for running since the 3rd gen. My 4th gen lasted about 4 months before it started changing volume, skipping tracks, and disconnecting my Nike+ receiver. My 5th gen lasted about 8 months before it started doing to same thing (stopped working with my Nike+ receiver after about a month), and now won't turn on at all. My 6th gen lasted a month and a half before it just died. The Nano is a great idea, used to be implemeted well, but they are charging way too much for what it is and the horrendous build quality. It wouldn't bother me as much if it weren't marketed as a workout device. Never buying one again. I have been using a shuffle for about a month, no problems yet.

I also have a 4 month-old 6th Generation Nano that had been working fine while jogging. Recently I ran a half-marathon with it with the Nike+ adapter and afterward it started looking dim and then just died completely. I sent it in for service and they are claiming they can't replace it due to "accidental damage or misuse". Based on the conversations here I'm planning to take it in to an Apple store and plead my case, but I don't know if it will help. This seems silly, if you are going to sell a product that has Fitness as an App and encourages you to use it while working out, it should be sweat resistant.

Same issue here, except for mine went out after only a month and a half. Finally got the time to drive to the Apple Store and have them look at it. Guy at the Apple Store told me it was water damage. I told him I ran with it and he told me sweat wouldn't be enough to do that...Called Apple Care tonight and they informed me that unfortunately they are susceptible to sweat damage and there's nothing they can do about it. Offered me a discounted price of $109. Why would I spend another $109 on something that's going to crap out on me after a month and a half? Over the past year, I've now bought a MacBook, an iPad, and an iPod and this is the thanks I get. Thanks, Apple. I love my MacBook but doesn't look like I'll be buying a new iPod from you guys any time soon. 🙂 If anyone from Apple monitors this board and would like to remedy this situation, I'm all ears.

Not sure why other people were able to receive replacements and I was not even though mine was well within the warranty period.

Just to follow-up I called back and asked that they made an exemption to the warranty coverage and to replace the iPod "out of warranty" and they did this for me. In order to do this you need to talk to tech support and ask for a supervisor. That tech supervisor still won't be able to approve the out of warranty coverage, but they can transfer you to a customer satisfaction supervisor (I think that was what they were called) who is able to approve the replacement.

I have already had two ipod nano 6th generations replaced by apple. I don't know whether it is sweat damage or a response to the jostling of running. On both occasions there was no sign of water damage. In fact both models were of otherwise prsitine appearance. The only issue was that the screen died.

Today unfortunatley the same has happened to my third ipod nano 6th generatino (in less than 8 months). I'm still waiting to hear back from Aplle regarding this. Very annoying....

Most of the time, if your display goes out or stays white, it is because of water damage of some kind. Sweat or any other kind of moisture can do it. That does not mean that something else can also do it, just that for the vast majority of cases like this, moisture is going to end up being the reason why. This actually applies to all electronics with a screen like this, not just the Nano.

Water damage can cause failures but that wasn't the reason for the failures that I had with mine (twice). There is no doubt in my mind that the nano 6th gen. was not built to handle any kind of jostling or shaking. Including a built-in pedometer in a device like this was a mistake. Marketing it as a device to track your physical actvity was a bigger mistake. I've accepted that the nano is fine for sitting or casual walking, and luckily my 3 year old Sansa does find for workouts. I'm sure Apple will learn from this, but people should be warned not to use this product for jogging or running.

Well, mine died after three weeks and a couple of runs - took it to the Apple store to be told it was water damage and no coverage - the little indicator in the head phone socket told them so. Have a replacement ordered at half price but am seriously considering bying H20 Audio's water proof case for the replacement to protect it. I asked in the Apple store if they had a water proof case and got a blank look.

I wouldn't have thought it that hard to make this device sufficient water resistant to handle sweating. Seems almost like it's sold under false pretences.

I have the same problem. Apple refused to repair/replace my unit, using the blanket reason "liquid damage", as in damage from sweat is in the same category as being put in the wash, or getting wet in the rain or getting coffee spilt on it.

My sweat probably travelled down the earphones, into the jack, and the ipod is so poorly designed the sweat somehow seeped in. Apple should either stop selling this product or at least put a warning on its limitations of use, that IT SHOULD NOT BE USED DURING EXERCISE.

p.s. Nike tied up with apple for this product, are they even aware of this product flaw?

Another Nano 6th generation down from sweat damage. I use mine in the gym for cardio after my workout and since I am taller my headphone cable isn't long enough to clip onto my waist so I clip it to the bottom of my short sleave shirt sleave. After a little over a month it started randomly turning itself off. I had recently updated it so I thought it was an issue with the software so I restored it once but then it died completely a few days later and couldn't even connect to iTunes. I sent it in and this was Apple's response:

"Your IPOD NANO (6TH GENERATION) has been inspected by Apple technicians, who have determined that it has been subjected to accidental damage or misuse, which is not covered by the warranty ..."

I bought it specifically for the gym as it was small and had a clip on it (along with the Nike feature) so I assumed it was meant for use while running / exercising. Guess from all these posts I was wrong. I will not buy another.
