damage from sweat

I am on my second 6th Generation Nano. The first was ruined by sweat (after only the second or third time running in hot Florida weather). They gave me a refurbished one...which failed after just one run in the heat. There was no rain. It was clipped to my waistband...because it has a built in clip and is supposedly made for running! When I brought the first one to the Apple store, they said they were not aware of this issue (hard to believe) and advised I wear it farther away from my body (AGAIN...IT HAS A CLIP FOR WEARING ON CLOTHING AND IS SUPPOSED TO BE CREATED FOR THIS ACTIVITY) I asked if there was a product available to protect against this problem and they were not aware of one (Watchbands for it are available in the store, but I do not want it on my wrist). I believe this to be a common problem (my wife and I had the same problem with the Shuffle...which also had a clip for clothing), but Apple employees (Genius...hmm?) claim to be oblivious to it!!!!!! Any solutions or similar experiences?

I'm on my 3rd 6th gen nano. I only use it for running. I never run with it in the rain. The first lasted 7 months, the second 2 weeks.

By comparison, my 3rd gen nano endured 3 years of running an still works.

I was using this on the first two that died: (the 30 pin was covered with an Nike+ adapter)

Now I switched to this:

and

If that doesn't work I will get this:

Bottom line: the plain, off the shelf nano is not water resistant and should not be used for working out until you either puth it in a case or get it water prooofed.

Another disappointed 6th gen nano user. My experience echos all of the other comments on this thread, the product is marketed as a running accessory to be clipped on clothing while running and that act destroys/ruins the device. Apple knows this and the almighty dollar shouldn't cloud what their solution should be, they should stand behind their products, PERIOD.

Made for motion.

The iPod nano design actually helps keep you fit. It’s portable and wearable, which makes it runnable, walkable, and workoutable. Clip it on and control your music with just a tap or swipe of a finger, so you can stay focused without fumbling around. For your run, walk, or trip to the gym, a little iPod nano goes a long way.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------

Where does it say make sure you don't even think about sweating because this product is rendered useless if in contact with any moisture. You do not even have to perspire on it, if your body produces any moisture vapor it penetrates this device and triggers the moisture sensor. I was very careful with my iPod not to have it come in contact with liquid of any kind and it still fried. What is considered a long way in their statement? Some people have theirs for weeks and it crashes, some for months. If I got 6 months out of this product would that be considered "a long way"? Apple does not stand behind their products and it shows by the quantity of dissatisfied customers posting on this thread. Just think of the number of people who don't bother posting who have been through the same situation as us.

Since I had my iPod replaced (at my own cost) I have not purchased any music, videos, books, or supported any Apple products. I suggest others that have the same issue with Apple do the same

the apple nano (6th gen and probably all of them) is the worst piece of crap product of all time, when it comes to running. I had this same issue and bought two of them before I swore off buying anything apple related for a long long time.

the apple store self-proclaimed geniuses were jerks and I got no satisfaction. I only hope that people reasearch and see some of these things before they too throw away a lot of money for a totally crappy product.

apple should own up to this issue, tell customers not to run with it, and they should sell a weather proof cover for it like they do for the other ipods. If you want to listen to music while running, do not waste your time and money on an ipod nano.

So far, so good with the all silicone wristwatch case that covers the buttons. I think sweat getting in at the volume and power buttons are what killed #2, since the moisture sensor in the headphone jack was not tripped. I think #1 died from sweat getting in at the headphone jack - the mopisture sensor on #1 was tripped and it is at the bottom of the headphone jack.

The screen cover also repells moiture better than the naked screen and it works even when your fingers are slick and sweaty, unlike the naked screen. I recommend it.

Fortunately, I do have AppleCare, though both replacements were under the original 1 year warranty.

What bothers me about this, aside from the frequent trips to the Apple stores, is that water proof wrist watch technology is at least 100 years old. This is NOT new territory. The techniques are well documented - and dirt cheap if you build it right from the beginning.

This device has 3 buttons, two openings, a touch screen and a unibody case with no seams. It should be almost trivially simple for any competent watch designer to make this device water proof (or resistant) with a few modest design changes. Even the addition of a few internal silicone gaskets would go a long way.

Apple, I know you can do better than this.

I spoke too soon. It seems this new case and screen protector do not offer as much protection as I need.

After about 1 hour of running, the run ends without me touching the device. I then have to start a new run. As time goes by, the new runs stop more frequently, and then the music randomly stops playing and I have to hit "play" on the screen every 5-10 minutes.

After 2 hours of running, the nano is practically having a nervous breakdown. It takes several button presses to turn on the screen. The music stops constantly and workouts end so frequently that I am making new ones every 5-10 minutes.

The one hour problem has happend 3 times. The two hour nano nervous collapse twice.

I think this is all related to humidity near the device and sweat. Time to get a waterproof nano.

I am really sorry I did not read these comments before I bought my IPOD Nano. Purchased it in april and last week my nano suddenly stopped playing during my jogging. Apple store told me it was dammaged due to humidity because red dot in ear plug in. No replacement or repair possible. Expensive purchase for using it only for 3 months (139 euros !). WHY DO THEY RECOMMEND USING IT FOR SPORTS ???? Will never buy anything from them again. No IPAD nor IMAC I planned to purchase. APPLE can go to ....... ! Aplle just lost a customer.

All these posts confirmed what i suspected -- AND ABOUT WHICH THE TECH AT THE APPLE STORE SEEMED IGNORANT. I'm on my third iPod Nano in less than two years, all died while running in Texas (No sweating here!). The last one died after less than four months. At least on the third occasion, they gave me a new one for free. They should have been honest that runners can't use these devices.

I can only hope some people read this BEFORE they buy a nano. I bought TWO before I realized I was an idiot for expecting apple to do anything other than take my money. the nano is totally CRAP for running. sweat will kill it, and apple will not cover that with their warranty. and apple will not acknowledge the problem nor will they sell any waterproof cover for it. they market it for sports, but it will not hold up.

DO NOT BUY A NANO FOR RUNNING!!!!

I am officially on iPod Nano #4 and #5

#3, a warranty replacement, started acting weird on a 90 minute run and died shortly after. Screen forze, wouldn't respond, wouldn't sync, couldn't reset and stayed on the "connected to computer" screen until the battery ran down.

After two days clipped to a fan, five days in an airtight jar of rice and all day charge, I was able to get it on and synced. The screen was foggy, with two veritical lines down the right side of the srceen. It constally rebooted and sometimes failed to repond again.

Back to the Apple store, and now I have #4, a warratny replacment. I will NEVER take this one running. Or sweat anywhere near it. I will probably give it to one of my nieces or nephews. It is officially retired.

Which brings me to Nano #5, a brand new water proof Nano from WaterFi http://waterfi.com/waterproof-ipod-nano

3 runs and a walk and so far no issues. The buttons feel different, but they do respond. I'm back to using this band: https://www.lunatik.com/products/lunatik?variant=11

Hopefully this Nano will last.
