I was having the same problem. Additionally, I received other errors on my iPad. When I purchased it, and turned it on it prompted me to connect to iTunes and set it up. Some people's came working out of the box, but mine had nothing set up on it. I plugged it in, and set it up like I would have done my iPhone.
Then I tried to install iBooks on the iPad itself and got the errors. After three days my patience has boiled over. After reading the top of this thread 15 minutes ago, I reset my iPad to factory. When that was done, I installed iBooks just fine. I was now able to "restore iPad" to my previous profile (which I chose not to do).
I'm sure you won't want to do this (I didn't) but when you get it out of the box and it shows that it has to be connected to iTunes to be used... I think that's the problem. Or perhaps this thread garnered enough attention that whatever bug there was got fixed, if only you're willing to reset.
Good luck!
