Cracked iPad glass

Warning had my iPad for one month. It was a lovely gift from my family. Fell out of my hands to the floor. Did not take much for the glass to break. I contacted Apple Care. They had me send it to them. Just sent it back saying it was too damaged to repair.Any suggestion for getting it repaired? It still works in fact I used it even with the cracked glass. Diappointed in Apple...I was hoping that they would stand by their product. Also do they offer a cover for the iPad2 that would prevent the glass from breaking?

I too, dropped my IPAD2 from about a 3 foot height. However, I wasn't initially worried because I had it in a $90.00 (thick) protective case. I was surprised to find the glass shattered when I opened the case. The corners on the case were exposed, and one corner took the brunt of the impact. The corner had a tiny chip, and although it works, the glass cracked across the entire screen. Fortunately, I purchased the IPAD2 on my American Express. They have a 'buyer's protection' program that will replace an item that is damaged, lost or stolen within the first 90 days. The process involves filing a claim, (sending them paperwork, receipts, and photos), then sending the item to AMEX (partner company) at your cost. AMEX also has the 'buyer's assurance' program that will double the manufacturer's warranty. If approved, your total purchase price will be credited back to your account. My local, northwestern NJ Apple store is not too accomodating, so I wouldn't expect they'd offer a replacement. I would definitely recommend checking with your credit card company to see if they offer a similar benefit. M

Take it to the Apple store. I had the same problem and they swapped it out for a brand new one which I'm currently using right now to reply to your thread. I wanted to jump up and down when the rep said they'd do it the first time for free. Next time gonna cost $317.00. I strongly encourage you to take it in. I'm almost sure they will do the same for you.

I have a leather portfolio case that I bought on amazon that has served me quite well. It has a cover that flips up and supports landscape/portrait usage. The otterbox would be nice and if I were in the habit of taking it to more 'risky' places, I'd look into one. The issue does seem to be protecting and padding the corners, in addition to not exposing it to tension that might crack it down the middle.

I'm starting to wonder if Apple released a more crack prone product with the iPad 2, I had an iPad 1, it flew over 100k miles with me (USA and EU) and in the end it was fine after a lot of bumps and knocks.

Two weeks ago iOS5 bricked my iPad 2, then I accidentally knocked it 18 inches off my coffee table and the glass cracked down the middle.

Apple Genius managed to restore my iPad 2 to working order but refused to help with the crack saying it's $319 dollars for a replacement. After spending $1600 dollars + App Store purchases in two years the lack of good will shocked me. My iPad 2 is now repaired thanks to ubreakifix for $209 and it's presently for sale on eBay.

A minor say $100 loss to Apple would of kept me happy and lead to an iPad 3 and iPhone 5 purchase in 2012, now I'm jumping ship to an Android Tablet (Kal-El based) next week and my iPhone is next on my list for replacement. Apple has just lost a customer for life.

I probably should have taken it back to the local Apple store, but I went through AMEX. I had to send it to them insured, and at my expense. The case was resolved quickly, and I promptly purchased a 64g to replace the 32g. While at the Apple store, I told my sales rep what had happened. He asked why I didn't bring it in to them, and went on to indirectly say they indeed would have 'helped me out.'. M

Dell does with CompleteCare Insurance. You can break your screen as many times as you like and Dell will cover it for the duration of the accidental insurance policy. Why doesn't Apple offer this type of insurance? AppleCare is useless because once you crack the iPad glass and choose not to repair it (i.e., spend the $329) the warranty you paid for is void! I call this coersion: either give us $$$ for a replacement iPad or your warranty will be void. 😟

As many times as you like, and with no deductible?

And for what product(s)?

Please provide a link.

Whatever insurance Dell offers for their cheap plastic garbage products is done by a 3rd party insurance carrier. I believe there are 3rd party insurance for the iPad and if so, I doubt it is for as many times as you like with no deductible.

The AppleCare extended warranty extends the standard one year warranty. It is warranty, not insurance. Dell probably offers the same for their cheap plastic garbage products, or maybe not. If you think it is coersion, stick with Dell's cheap plastic products and pay for their 3rd party insurance.

I have it for my laptop. There is no deductible. Have a bad motherboard? A tech comes and fixes it on your kitchen table. One laptop of mine went through 4 motherboards and it didn't cost me a dime. nother laptop had its DVD drive replaced free.

To quote the tech 'step on it and we fix it'

Now my laptop is 4 years old and out of warranty and I have no idea if the policy has changed lately, but yes, it is 100% coverage even for accidental damage. You do pay for it. I think it came out to over 100 per year, but it was worth it.

This has just happened to my daughter's iPad 2. No drop, no floors or hard surfaces, she clinked the edge with her plate as she sat down and the entire thing shattered from that spot and cracked right across. I've written to Apple, wait to hear their view. Very, very disappointing and she's really upset. She's only 12 and worked her butt off for an entire summer to earn half the money to buy this.

@ Alan Sampson. You're a knob! Get a life.

If apple makes a product they promote as going pretty much every where, they better be ready to stand behind it's durability. If they can't make it durable than stop robbing your customers with rediculous repair costs. I've put alot of money into apple in the last six months, jumping on that band wagon because they're commercials were touching. Not worth the price and I'll encourage anyone else to find an alternative.

But they're trying to promote this for kids and students to use, to take to school as a replacement for text books. Does anyone honestly think that alot of these kids aren't going to end up cracking the glass somehow? If they're going to make a product like this so fragile, than replacements shouldn't be so expensive, especially after you already spend money on all the apps, games, videos, etc. And if you're going to come on a forum where someone's seeking help, than have something postive to say because it can happen to anyone and it could, and probably will happen to you.

The screen is made of glass therefore it's fragile. Kids should learn to take care of their property and there are cases available as well. If you don't think it's possible then you can go through an insurance policy.

It's not about being negative but rather stating the truth. Yes, someone is seeking help and the answer has been given. I have had my iPad for about a year and it doesn't have a single scratch, same for my other devices, which I've had for longer.

Sometimes things happen but you can't expect to get a new one for free when there has been user damage, defects are different and are covered.
