Hi. I still have the same problem. I have iMac with iTunes, iPhone and Apple TV2 connected. Everything worked fine untill I installed a new router form O2, Huawei HG622u. It stopped working, the Home Sharing icon disappears and ATV2 works only for 1 min and only sometimes. I updated, disconnected and reinstalled everything but did not help.

So I contacted the Apple Support and found out:

- try iTunes with another user or create a new one from your computer

- if it does not work, as in my case, the most probable reason is the router or firewall set up

Here you can find some interesting articles how to set up UDP, port 5353 used with Home Sharing, etc.

I hope it helps. I am going to try as well.

I couldn't get this to work, until I realized that I needed to conduct the home sharing transfer process prior to hitting the "DONE" button. Once you hit "DONE", home sharing closes. See the helpful post from another user below, and refrain from hitting "DONE" until you are finished with the home sharing process:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4620 This explains everything very clearly and easily. I was having the same problem until I realized the home sharing has to be the same apple id on both computers. Once I typed my apple id into my wife's computer for home sharing the houses showed up and transferring media was simple. Hope this helps

Nicely done, I think that ENDS this discussion.

While I believe I've read all I could, and most likely the link you supplied, I tried again, First clicking the link:

Setting up Home Sharing in iTunes

Then reading down I saw:

Note: After enabling Home Sharing, the Home icon representing your computer is no longer visible.

This was the ISSUE all along. I have my home sharing enable in iTunes prefs, I also enable it manually through the menu, and everytime I clicked "DONE", it disappeared, NOW I see this is the normal behavior! Since I have always been able to access my shared Library via my iPad on my own wireless network, I should have "assumed" this was the "normal" behavior, and now I KNOW it is. I think that's all we were after all along. Thanks! End of "issue" for me.

No offense, good advice, but this is the same information one can get if they start reading from the beginning of this thread, message #2 specifically recommends "reading", the supplied LINK, which I have pasted below. When at that Apple Support page, read: Section #5. Check Firewall Settings

There you will see the suggestions for what "ports" to open. I suggest for anyone new that begins by reading the final pages of this thread, that they start from the beginning of the thread, as you might find your answer, with a bit of work, otherwise relying for a "quick" fix, you may not get what you are after!

This was the best advice for me. The link shows the difference between Home Sharing and Music Sharing which allows you to play music from another computer, simply by enabling Music Sharing from both computers - the link shows how to do it for Mac and for Windows.

Home Sharing allows you to move music between libraries via drag and drop. But to your point, the same AppleID and Password needs to be entered into all computers on the network. Also, it seems to be omni-directional - using my wife's AppleID/Password allowed copying in either direction. Works great. Thanks for the tip.

I have spend hours and hours looking at this problem and finally managed to figure out what was going on.

My symptoms: I couldn't see the itunes shared library from my ipads (1 and 2) and my 2 apple TVs

It used to be working fine and I couldn't figure out what had changed

I had tried:

  • Turning off and on sharing (about a million times)
  • Rebooting (more than a million)
  • Disabling Norton
  • Removing Norton
  • Disabling Windows firewall

None of which would fix the problem.

It turns out the problem was one of my iphones was trying to sync wirelessly to the itunes. For some reason this seems to consistantly bugged up the sharing functionality.

I had to physically connect the iPhone vua USB turn off the wireless sync and now it works!!

I hope that helps someone else.

Solved mine after 2 weeks. i think all this happened after IOS 6 update.

  • On my PC (Win 8) I opened up ports for TCP (3689) and UDP (5353) in Windows firewall as incoming rules.
  • Reboot the machine
  • On iTunes (10.7.1), Turn on Sharing using Apple ID.
  • Edit->Preferences-> Sharing->Click ok
  • On iPad – Wi-fi – make the IP address static
  • Use DNS as 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4
  • Go to the router console from Safari browser
  • Under Advanced setup, click on NAT and add virtual server for opening ports (I use Beetel router)
  • Add the ports for TCP and UDP with the IP address of the ipad (Static IP)
  • Restart the router after saving the configuration
  • Go to Music and add the Apple ID for sharing.(use same id used for PC)
  • Click Music and click more along with playlists and albums
  • You will see ‘Shared’, click on it, you should see the library shared from your PC

I too, recently updated to itunes 10.5, and it stopped my home share working- even though it is showing home share "on" - I tried uninstalling & reinstalling an older version of itunes but itunes kept updating it automatically, umpteen times.
With so many users with the same problem why don't Apple send us a solution or allow us to go back to the older version of itunes while they fix this?

Exact same problem with me. Home Share just disappears after I hit "Done". I've tried to turn off home share and turn it back on. Doesn't work. I've tried to reboot iTunes AND the computer for both machines. Doesn't work. I've tried to reset the router. Doesn't work. Both machines have the latest iTunes installed. Still doesn't work. Why?!?! Please help!
