All I want is a simple spreadsheet similar to microsoft's excel program. I'm a new mac user and cannot find anything like that on my computer. (I can't even find a word program to type a document!) Do I have to buy a separate app just for this?

Yes it's called Numbers, part of the iWork suite. You can buy it on the Mac App Store and also find information about it right here.
BTW did you know about MS Office for Mac? If you need 100% compatibility between some PC users that use Excel this might be the best solution for you. You can find it at www.microsoft.com/mac
As I am aware apple sell their own equivalent known as "Numbers" and this is located in the iWork package they sell. Furthermore, If you wish to use Microsoft office again you could always buy Microsoft Office Mac 2011. Both of these cost around the same price and have mostly the same features. If you want my advice I recommend buying Microsoft Office Mac as I find it has a interface similar to Numbers and does all the same features as Numbers along with more.
You can download Numbers for only $19.99 which is much less expensive than buying MS Office. If you decide to use it here is a link to some tutorials.

If you want something free, there are alternatives such as LibreOffice. The interface isn't as polished as Excel or Numbers, but it might be worth a look.
