Error 7 (Windows Error 14001)

Neither iTunes nor QuickTime work. My computer restarted one night due to some error and since then I get an "Error 7 (Windows Error 14001)" error. I have Win 7 64bit and iTunes 10. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall, I've downloaded and installed the .net framework and C++ stuff I've seen in other threads on the issue, none of it helps. When I try to reinstall, it fails and tells me I don't have the permission. Thing is this is MY computer and I'm the only user, so I'm the administrator.

The installation error says "Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privelages" or something very, very close to that. I had it written down but this page randomly reloaded itself and I lost it. As for the error I get trying to open iTunes, I get 2. The first says "iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 14001)." The other message says the same thing, except it's for iTunesHelper and it doesn't mention the Windows error code.

The error message for QuickTime says much more, and is the only one to list a file path. It says "C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more details." I'm fairly knowledgable about computers, at least more so than the average user, and I have NO idea what that means.

This is so strange, iTunes worked perfectly 2 days ago. Thank you for your help b noir.

Those are suggesting damage to your Apple Application Support. (Apple Application Support is where single copies of program files used by multiple different Apple programs are kept.)

Let's try something relatively simple first. Restart the PC. Now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "Apple Application Support" and then click "Repair".

If no joy after that, try the more rigorous uninstall/reinstall procedure from the following post:

I am a Japanese user of iTunes/iPod. I have exactly the same problem from yesterday. I am still unable to use iTunes even after I uninstalled iTunes deleted all folders about Apple inc., and re-installed .NET framework & iTunes. I read all suggestions about Error 14001 on the web. Very disappointing. Any new suggestions?

I am T.U. I finally gave up fixing it based on Apple's support. I backed-up all folders under my music, etc to D drive. I initialized C drive, re-install Windows 7, re-installed applications e.g. iTunes which I used, restored all backup folders from D drive, initialized iPod and synchronized with iTunes. It took 4 hours, but recovered as before.

hello everyone,

I've the same problem. i tried every solution about unintalling/reinstalling, i also tried to cut off all "security" programs and the maximum of other services.... but nothing works !! it says that apple mobil device support service can't start because of an error in the "cote à cote"(google translate : "abreast"or "side by side") configuration. I don't understand at all how the problem arrived on my computer....so depressing x(

I wouldn't like to do as T.U because i've a lot of files to save and a lot of programs to reinstal if i reinstal windows.

if anyone has a solution or even just an idea to fix the problem... just say it !!!!

nice day all !

greetings from France.

I tried every variation of fix, everytime i checked my installed updates the MS C++ 2005 redist update wasnt actually listed even though it had attempted and showed the history of installing it many times, so I can only imagine its something to do with this update not installing properly.

Like others, in the end I had to use System Restore to the day before the last MS critical update, still had to re-install itunes but now its working.

I find it shocking that Apple and MS haven't really dealt with this issue.

I'm STILL trying to figure out the problem here. I've noticed a few other programs having trouble opening. Mass Effect 2 gives me some error about a "side-by-side configuration" problem, Dragon Age Origins can't find "fmod_event.dll," The Witcher randomly doesn't work and neither does Oblivion (and that's my favorite game!!!). Sine multiple programs give me the same error (the side-by-side config one I get with both ME2 and QuickTime), I think this is a Microsoft problem, not an Apple/iTunes problem. I'm in contact with somebody at MS support but the dude is taking forever to respond, hopefully because he's hard at work looking for a fix.

I'm wondering if we're all having the same Windows Update problem. Mine keeps telling me I need to install a security update for MS Visual C++ 2005 sp1 (KB2538242) but when I do, it lists it as an important needed update again no matter what. I've reset WU, cleared the "cache" or whatever it's called in this case and uninstalled/installed the update multiple times, nothing gets rid of it.

Does this stuff sound like what you guys have also been dealing with or is your problem exclusive to iTunes/QuickTime? I'm wondering if they're related. The MS guy swears it's an Apple issue with iTunes (naturally, anything to avoid helping) but this all happening at the same time seems a bit too conspicuous to me. Strongly considering just giving up and reinstalling Windows.

I did find a slight work around to at least get media onto my iPod. A free program called Floola is pretty basic but works for the time being.

Anyway, let me know if your guys' problems are like mine and maybe we can try figuring this out ourselves since neither MS or Apple seems to care.

PS (I know its long, sorry) I tried Kent102's solution and it didn't work for me but I read on another thread that it resolved the Mass Effect 2 issue I mentioned earlier for somebody else so try that out, I'd think it's your best bet at this point.

I'm not tecchie at all but this sounds horribly like my laptop. I can't download iTunes or Quicktime, I can't download the Windows updates, and my powerDVD DX player is not working now either. This has been going on for over a week and I think it could be a Windows issue - more and more downloads and I can't download the one you've described either.
