Is it possible to use an iPad to detect ultrasonic sound i.e. Bats

Can an iPad microphone, in conjunction with an App be used to pickup ultrasonic frequencies between 20 and 120khz. I am thinking of developing an app to monitor Bats and would like to know if a special microphone would be required or if I could use the built-in one? Tx

iPad, iOS 4.3.2

I think the iPad microphone may have adequate frequency response, but its associated electronics may not as Keith mentioned. If you are an App developer, Apple may provide the information you need.

There are other ultrasonic detectors and receivers that cost less than what Keith suggested, although they might not integrate as easily with the iPad. Check out <http://www.midnightscience.com/ultrasonics.html>. I think they can supply the ultrasonic transducer if you want to build an interface.
