Anyone know what's happening when their iPhone 3G's screen goes black during a call and you can't get the screen to light up to end the call?

If you have a case on it. try removing it and see if that helps.
You can try a reset.
Or a restore.
This was happening with my 3gs as well ... I read this post, tried removing the case and voila!! It no longer happens! I bought only bought this case a few months ago, a heavy duty Otterbox case, but never realized this was what was causing the issue. Ah well, going to need another new case now... hopefully no issues will arise as well .. thanks!
