The little rainbow wheel keeps spinning. How can I stop it and get back to Powerpoint?

Well if powerpoint is frozen you might have to force quit it, which will delete all unsaved work. (Hold down command-option-escape and a box comes up, click on the program you want to force quit, which would be powerpoint, and then click force quit and then click yes)
I was only into the ppt a few slides and hadn't specifically saved it. Does PPT do an auto save, auto recovery? Otherwise, force quit will lose the rest of the ppt. It started with an oversized copy paste from a document from the web. Is it likely the task will occur and the spinning will stop?
The default setting for 2011 PowerPoint is to autosave every 10 minutes.
