Insert a region 1 DVD. When you insert a DVD that uses a different region code, a dialog appears asking you if you want to change the DVD drive’s region code.
IMPORTANT:You can change the region code of a DVD drive only five times (including the original setting); the fifth setting is permanent. Don’t change the region code of a DVD drive unless you expect to play only DVDs that match the new region code in the future.

Insert a region 1 DVD. There's a limit to how many times the drive's region can be changed.

apple here is applying a misguided attempt to protect the movie industry and totally screwing over international customers. they rigged the dvd drive, so that it eventually only plays, rips, burns dvd from one region. in this global village, many mac users have roots in different countries and cultures and would like to watch movies from those respective reasons. however, their needs are sacrificed for protecting an obsolete movie industry from that 1% of users that would misuse the drive. simply pitiful apple.
having said that, there was a way to flash the matshita drive in os 10.6, but apple closed even that door with os lion by scrapping support for rosetta. the main apps affected: the matshitaflasher (to make the dvd drive region free), and MacTheRipper (to copy dvd) ... apple once stood for innovation and freedom from windows, now it seems just another pawn of big business ... 😟

What Jim has written here is correct, but there's a load of stuff about this issue on the internet and some proposed ways to workaround this limitation. I'm not posting any links because I don't approve, so I'm just giving further warnings:
- Any system of making your DVD player region free may be in breach of local laws.
- It may not work on your particular computer.
- It may seriously snark your system and render the DVD drive unusable or fixed to the wrong region.
Personally, I would never try any of them and I stick with buying DVDs only within my local region.

Some DVDs, sometimes referred to as having region code 0, can be played regardless of the region to which your DVD drive is set.
You can determine your drives' region setting by inserting a DVD disc and selecting the DVD Player File menu > Get disc info and click Regions.
When I insert a dvd from a different region I'm not being prompted to change anything and I can't figure out how to change the region otherwise?
any ideas?
