sync to a new computer

I have an iphone 4 with the latest software update and a Windows 7 laptop. Recently my origianal laptop that I synced my iPhone too went down and is unusable so i had to buy a new laptop. So the question is how do I sync the Iphone to my new computer without loosing everything?

Thanks for any help!

I assume from your message that you do not have a backup of the old pc, so I hope you make it a high priority to add an automatic backup process to the new one!

What kind of iPod do you have? If it is a Classic (or anything OTHER than an iPod Touch or iPhone) you can connect it to your computer and it will appear as an additional disk drive in My Computer; you can then just drag the music from it to the new PC, then add it to iTunes by dragging the folder onto the iTunes app when it is running.

If it is a Touch or iPhone it will not appear as a disk, but you can still copy anything purchased from the iTunes store to your computer as follows:

  1. Launch iTunes, then go to the Store menu and Authorize it to the same iTunes account the old computer used.
  2. Connect the device and wait for it to be recognized, then choose "Transfer Purchases" from the iTunes file menu.

This will copy all music, purchased videos and apps to iTunes on the new computer. When you then sync they will be copied BACK to the iDevice.

Note that this will not save photos in the Photo app or music from other sources. There is no easy way to save those, but there are programs that you can buy for your computer that will allow you to extract these files from the iPhone. TouchCopy is one, but you can find other by googling for "iphone file browser".

Hi,

Sorry to harp on about this widely covered subject but I'm really getting nowhere fast with this problem.

I have a new laptop all set up with the latest itunes, I've got all my music back into my library as it was on an external HD, ive backed up my iphone to this account, transfered purchases, authorised this computer, de-authorised all other computers and still - when I go to sync my phone it has a strop and gives me "Delete everything and then sync" Message.

On my phone it says it will wifi sync to this PC, but I can't add any of my library music onto my phone now.

As soon as I try to check the box for manage music manually I get the same message.

It basically syncs but wont change anything.

As I managed to screw up the ios5 update and lost everything bar contacts synced to mobileme I really don't want to wipe the phone again after just getting it back to how I like it.

Please save me from deleting everything again!

Thanks.
