I use a 2TB Time Capsule. I think it works great. I put over 175 movies and 2000 television episodes on the Time Capsule. There is only a few second buffering in the beginning and there is no lag when I stream videos at home. I have two Macs and a iPhone using 802.11g and 802.11n and both streams very well.

What's your method to access your files from outside your Home network? Using Mac's Finder and mount a shared folder using AFP? Such as... afp://yourip/sharedname

DS File for iPad/iPhone will be much faster than any kind of remote mount protocol..

OS X will treat remote folder like if it's local folder. SUPER long to load if the folder itself contains over 100+ items. I believe the load time is due to metadata it tries to load for each file... ie: if it's a JPG, it loads thumbmail, EXIF 2.0, etc... If it's docx, it loads thumbnail, extended info, etc..

Have you tried accessing to your DS using FTP? It bypass the metadata for sure.. 🙂

Hi All,

I am new to setting up networks, so apologies if I am not as knowledgeable as many others on this thread. I know the main recommendations on here seem to be Synology NAS which I have looked into and seem extremely good, but I was after any of your expert advice.

I am looking for something slightly cheaper than the Synology NAS's and have found a Seagate Business Storage STBN4000200 NAS which is a 2-Bay NAS and has all the features I am looking for - private cloud, centralised storage/backup, mobile access on smartphones and tablets, RAID enabled, media server, etc; and says that it supports Time Machine as I am a Mac User (iMac, MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone) and also 1 Android device.

Has anyone had any experience with Seagate NAS's and if so would you recommend them for what I am looking to achieve above?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

A lot of really great suggestions here. I've been piecing together how to get all the software on my mac to integrate in a NAS set up. For what it's worth, I would strongly recommend the Synology Brand for a NAS setup. There are other options out there, but I've been really really happy with their product. There are multiple NAS products Synology sells, but I went with the following: Synology DiskStation 2-Bay

I thought the reviews were particularly helpful as there are so many different ways that people are using these. All mac house or mixed PC/Mac houses all seem to be happy.

I'm still working on my final setup, but I just bought one of these and I couldn't be happier! Thanks to all the great ideas and info here.....a tremendous resource.

I would strongly recommend staying with the Synology brand of NAS/server. I looked at the option that Western Digital had to offer and there were multiple users complaining about mac compatibility. There are many different uses one may explore with a NAS/server, so your results may vary of course.

I highly recommend Synology BeyondCloud 1-Bay to any novice NAS/server user out there. I would advise any user to go to synology website for this line of NAS drivers when you first get the product. If you are looking for a NAS drive, if you are looking for cloud, if you are looking for access to anything file related on your mobile devices. Then stop here and compare everything else to this. I also recommend a 5 to 8 port Gigabyte Switch that has 10GB Burst for maximum file transmissions and of course if you want to go with that kinda of speed then do not forget the CAT 6a RJ-45 network cables.
