Will my HP C5580 printer work with Lion?

Lion hasn't been released so we have no way of knowing about printer support.

The HP support site lists 10.6 Snow Leopard drivers, so Intel drivers are out there. While you may not be entitled to free phone support, you can certainly visit the website to download drivers.

I'm afraid you will have to wait. Unless HP ports their apps to work on Lion or even Leopard you can forget about the apps if they are PPC based. This would mean they're dependent on Rosetta and Apple appears to have dropped support for that on Lion. However the printer itself may have no problems, you just have to wait. You may have to switch applications to Lion based apps but you should be OK. You will just have to wait like the rest of us.

As far as HP doing anything to update their software to run on Intel based OS X machines I wouldn't hold your breath.

Hi there I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your printer probably won't work with Lion. I purchased the HP Photosmart C5580 all in one last year and it only worked properly up until 10.4 ... I contacted them for support and they said that I would have to revert to OS 10.4 because as they put it " HP doesn't have time to deal with all the Macintosh issues and updates " I then asked them why they would make a printer and not support it properly as with say Epson which I have never had any issues with in the 10 years I had one. He said it was Apples fault for upgrading their OS and not taking into consideration HP drivers.

The printer currently works but not well. I can print pages sure but I cannot scan properly and it won't print on CDs which is why I bought it in the first place. The HP support person told me that at least I could still print LOL.

What a waste of money and time ( I tried figuring out how to get it to print on CD's ) I now essentially own a paper weight. I feel like going down to HP Canada and leaving it on their doorstep... or maybe doing a youtube video with it. I spent $ 200 bucks on it only a year ago.

NEVER again will I ever buy an HP product. Its not Apple's fault it's HP's lazy IT dept ....

As counterpoint, my C5580 has worked flawlessly under all versions of 10.6 since we bought the unit nearly 2 years ago. Scans and disc printing are normal as well. I wish I could use it via AirPrint connected to my APExtreme router, but it's a known problem that under that setup the scanner will not function. And Ecomm's Printopia is a perfect replacement anyway 🙂

Now, I've kept it updated with HP's latest drivers via OS X Software update, so maybe that's why it works for me.

Will assume that all the major manufacturers will have updated driver packages inside 10.7, since final developer builds have been around for more than a couple of months. If history with 10.6 in August 09 is any guide, it's the very old printers that will suffer problems under the new OS when released - but anything in the past 3-4 years is likely to be included in the launch drivers.

However, with Rosetta support being dropped from Lion there is no way any of HPs legacy printer apps will function and it is highly doubtful that they will come out with any replacements since the existing ones are already 4+ yrs old and did not see any updates from 10.5 to 10.6. We had a Photosmart 7560 before getting the C5580, and used HPs software back then for the 7560 under our Windows setup.

OP may want to spend some time investigating the print/scan capabilities of both Preview and iPhoto, which are reasonably robust and offer many similar features to the HP software - I never found much that I had to have from HPs software but missed under OS X.

Thanks everyone from me as well. I fortunately bought an extended warranty with my HP printer and returned it saying that it had printing problems ( hint.. software problems ) I too bought an Epson Artisan 835 with my refund. I'm happy to say that I will N E V E R buy another Hewlett Packard product ever again. There was more drama with that printer than a drag queen at a gay bar. There was always problems with their Mac support. They claim that they support Mac but I think my mother knows more about Apple Computers than these people ( and my moms 70 ! )

Apple makes drivers available on their website. I didn't find Lion drivers but Snow Leopard versions were available. This is the link I used HP Printer Drivers v.2.6 for Mac OS X v10.6

Kiss your software goodbye, however. Given the HP response to out-of-warranty questions, it appears that HP went to Microsoft Friendly Support school -- as reliably documented in this thread. I really don't like the old Caveat Emptor attitude so HP goes on my list with Lexmark as a NEVER AGAIN candidate.
