@Kenfinger: Hello, please note NTFS needs be on both disks, if NTFS only on source disk or only on target disk, it does not works. Network drives cannot be used.

@spiritlifestyles: the junction executable needs be in your PATH: you have to move manually the exe to a directory pointed by PATH. Please make sure your operative system supported and you using NTFS on both sides.

Yeah, thanks Andrea. My XP computer has been stuggling the last couple months due to C being eat'n alive by my iPod and iTunes inflexablity. I really didn't want to have to do this work around. iTunes should be more configurable. If I say don't install iTunes on C, and don't put my library on C, why would Apple think I want 10 gigs of app data and backup data for my iPod touch on C? But Andrea's solution worked using Junction with XP. I not only used it for the backup folder, but also for the mobile applications folder located in "My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Mobile Applications". Now my computer is acting good again instead of constently lagging up.

However, my question now is...What happens when I upgrade iTunes? Will it mess up the install? Will I have to recreate the junctions? Better having a working computer then the most recent update of iTunes though.

I am using too this workaround, and after several upgrades all works fine both on Mac (soft links) and Windows (junctions) (I am using same library on Mac and my bootcamp partition, that is reason I had the trouble to find how to handle everything to avoid duplicates). This will break if and when the hardcoded paths iTunes using for its own things, will be changed from the actual ones.

I too strongly advice that the user-configurable library path must have everything inside, i.e. backups and mobile apps folder and everything else, or they have to be made configurable by user (i.e., a "system" path user option), to let the user choose where its own files must reside.

Just keep this hints as a "workaround" while we all wait for this improvement, and please remember made backups of your data before messing with your system🙂

Please be aware that mklink only works for versions of Windows from Vista onwards, ie Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7. For previous versions of Windows you will need to use the Junction utility instead.

Unfortunately Junction only allows you to set up a link to a folder on a Local Disk Drive (a drive inside your computer) but will not allow you to use a network drive such as a NAS.

If you want to set up a link to a folder on a NAS you will need to use MKLink. MKLink will also link to a folder on a local drive, so if you have a later version of Windows you can stop using Junction and use MKLink all the time.

MKLink works beautifully. Because my local drive is a 120Gb solid state drive I have no room for storing data which would be a problem if I didn't have MKLink. But many programs insist that your data is stored on the Local C:drive, such as Microsoft Outlook, Google Picasa, iPad backups. MKLink allows me to store all these data sources on my NAS L:drive instead.
