Final Cut Pro X - Import AVCHD?

You can use it with the Preset: Re-wrap AVCHD for Quicktime - uncompressed Audio, Format: mov, Codecs: Passthrough, PCM

You can fine-tune the audio to get exactly the same format as ClipWrap.

1. Open 'Preferences'.

2. Select 'Presets'.

3. Double click 'Re-wrap AVCHD for Quicktime - uncompressed Audio'

4. Change to 'Audio' tab

5. Change it to 24-bit

Very nice, the results from both Clipwrap and media converter seem similar! However when it came to converting 60p files to .mov clipwrap did a better job, media convert left the 'interlace' artifacts where as clipwrap did not. The audio also sounded better on the one from clipwrap.

However, lets see if the rewrapped 60p file will be editable in FCPX!

Did you fine-tune the audio of the Media Converter preset to 24-bit? (That should be the only difference in default mode.)

Regarding your 'interlace' artifacts: I had no such thing with my 60p SONY footage - absolutely no difference to ClipWrap, so maybe it depends on the cam.

However - it would be a nice gesture to everyone if you didn't berate a newcomer or unfamiliar some-time user to this thread, (as above RE: a "double post"). It isn't a friendly gessture - helps no one....and seems a bit mean-spirited, even. I assume you do NOT mean it that way, but perhaps in the future you could direct persons who are "lost" on a previously-discussed and posted / solved subject to [any] page on THIS FORUM where the written help / instructions / advice / solution is already given, instead?

The poster put the same message on more than one thread. It's really inconsiderate to do that because someone answers a question for them in one place, only to then realize theyr'e wasting their time because the poster had been responded to elsewhere in other threads. It's just a really inconsiderate thing to do. The reason for my post is to indicate that the poster had their question answered elsewhere, and it wasn't necessary to waste your time answering it here as well. It just seems that some people feel they should spam the board with the same words in multiple threads to, I don't know, maybe to get multiple opinions, or to try to get asnwered more quickly, or whatever, but it's just selfish I think.

Actually, I thought Tom's reply was appropriately brief.

Hi guys, I managed to import MTS files straight to FCP X from my Panasonic HDC-HS900 using the "import from camera" command and I was very pleased cause this had been a major pain.

However, next time I had the exact same problem. Until I found out that using "Recorder" when connecting the camera via USB made the trick (earlier I've always used the PC optioner when importing).

I have some shots with a sony hxr mc50e.

The files are .MTS AVCHD, and ffprobe says:

Stream #0.2[0x1200]: Subtitle: pgssub

I tried to use some settings to re--wrap this video, ending up with this:

ffmbc -i input.MTS -acodec aac -strict experimental -vcodec copy -ab 256k output.mov

This resulted in nice videos that worked very well in imovie - but not at all in Final Cut Pro X.

In Final Cut Pro X, random green frames appeared, and even after export in best quality, the video was jumping frames.

I also could not use ffmpeg, this error resulted with the same command-line:

[mov @ 0x102079a00] Application provided invalid, non monotonically increasing dts to muxer in stream 0: 1 >= 1

av_interleaved_write_frame(): Invalid data found when processing input

For the same reason, I could also not use media encoder, as this uses ffmpeg.

I found out that I could use a different setting to ffmbc in order to produce video that would be understood by Final Cut Pro X, but at very high cost.

ffmbc -i input.MTS -target xdcamhd422 -s 1920x1080 output.mov

The costs are: the resulting video is 8 times larger than the MTS, the transcoding times are considerable, and the pixels needed to be interpolated. And this does not count possible degrading due to the encoding process.

Clipwrap succeeds to do the wrapping in the blink of an eye, producing videso that are around 1.5 times larger than the original, and that can be nicely imported (and used) within imovie and Final Cut Pro X.

Now does anyone know how I could use ffmbc in order to mimick the clipwrap behaviour?

I am toatally new to video and am trialling FCP X before buying it - I have a Panasonic SD90, and an SDXC card (to get round 4 meg file size imposed by FAT format) - I attach the camera to my MacAir via USB, but FCP X does not register my camera, i.e can't see it-, I don't know if it is the USB link not working, SDXC card not supported or soemthing else such as codecs? Anyone used Panasonic S90 and or SDXC card with FCP X ?

Does the card mount of the desktop? Does the computer have a built-in card reader?

aha - just saw the above post from FCPfan2B re using the Recorder option and not PC - works perfectly :-) Thanks you so much so I know that the SDXC card is recognised - phew! Just got to learn the rest of FCP X now but am looking forward to it - I want to try using input from two Cameras and the sound from Zoom H4n and syncing it all with the PluralEyes add-in - an interesting project since I have not done any video work before woohoo !

I advise to begin with a two hours movie with 5 famous first-actors, a lot of people around you and create the best movie we have ever seen. Pace of cake... espacialy for a beginner

Ha ha Thanks Bruce27 - actually not far off the mark! I filmed a mate's blues band at the weekend in a busy Pub- Bought 2 cameras off eBay last week, left one running all the time (fitted with SDXC card so filmed continuous 2 hours) with the Zoom sound recordere mounted on top and used the other to move around grabbing close-ups. Downloaded FCP X trial, and PluralEyes trial - one hour into the project and it's all going spiffy so far :-) and all this is new gear with no previous experience on my part. I had always thought video editing was a Dark Art, but am finding FCP X a doddle 😎 and I'm 61 !

I am really glad to hear of your promissing results thanks to fcpX. Congragulations! You never should have done this with e.g. fce for the first time.
