Final Cut Pro X - Import AVCHD?

Sorry to sound stupid in such austere company, but simply put, can anyone tell me if Handbrake can convert AVDCH files from a Sony HDR CX700 camcorder for editing in FCPX and will it include the metadata

Handbrake converts to a delivery format and isn't really suitable for use with FCP.

I just bought a sony hd camera and was to say the least disappointed with the output of the dvd I got with idvd. Did some trial and error stuff with camera. Got a mini to full size hdmi cable and loved the quality I got on my tv from the camera. The problem was IDVD and IMOVIE convert. I went and got a copy of adobe premiere elemnts for $50 and it does the same work sa IMOVIE or IDVD and lets you export to dvd in avchd format and the dvd looked great!!! Till apple imports and supports native files I'm going with premeire. Why would you want to convert when they can stay in native format?

So you came onto the Final Cut Pro forum to tell us that iMovie and iDVD only make standard definition discs. What's this have to do with FCP? Did you use that? Did you burn an AVCHD red laser disc from it?

If you would mention which camera model you bought and which quality you selected for recording someone could help.

I've got a SONY HDR-XR 160 and I just can't get FCPX (10.0.1), FCP7 or even iMovie (as the camera manual says) to import anything at all.

This camera uses the AVCHD codec, under MTS.

Has anybody found any workaround like a codec installer or something to directly import into FCPX?

When I take photos, iPhoto opens without any problems, but iMovie can't find the camera or files.

I would like to convert files directly to proRes (I've tried third party softwares but they are too slow, specially because I have many 2 hours files and I wouldn't like to spend more money and hd and more software)

Any apple support on this?

Is your camera on the Final Cut Pro X compatibility list?

Which quality do you use? 1080/60p with 28Mbps?

I got the same camera and did not the results I got with Imovie or Idvd. Yes you can import if you have Imovie open first. I have not used final cut I'm using adobe premiere It leaves the files in native format and the output is Super good. Prmiere makes the dvd a blu ray quality disc that only will play on a blu ray player. There is a you tube video that shows how to import to imovie.

Use ClipWrap. Is very fast and unfortunately i think is the only way for mts files 1080/60p or 50p.

Clipwrap will not change any code. Will not convert! It will rewrap your files. After it, you can convert to proress.

Hey since the last 10.0.4 update I can import AVCHD 1080p50 files from my Sony HX9V! It's nowhere in the release notes, but it seems to work now 🙂

right, here is what has worked for me ( even after having the MTS clips renamed and put in my HD)

1.close FCP

2.put a card (just a random SD) that you have formated in the cam u used for the vids.

3.copy the complete private folder (change teh name of the vids in the stream folder to the original ones if u have to) --(u can see the original name by looking into the clipsifno folder

4.eject sd card

5.start FCP

6.put the card in the slot

7.FCP should see the card and the vids automaticaly.

the above is based on the latest FCPX running on an 27" imac 12g ram

Before posting I've tried everything... 720p 30fps, 1080p, i 60, all of them.

The strange thing is that in the manual and the box it has an apple compability icon. So I didn't check the compatibility list before...

I haven't tried FPX yet (I've managed to capture all with iMovie!!!!)

For those with problems yet:

(Caps Lock for those who look for a fast tip) What I did was to UPDATE ALL SOFTWARE. Even Sony had an update for this camera. Another strange thing: All went ok when I updated iPhoto... or maybe quicktime... who knows... I'll try to capture via FCPX again on next capture (now I'm busy on editing)

I've made another test: it needs the power plugged to work anyway.

Since the latest FCPX update to 10.0.4 I can import AVCHD footage from my Canon Legria Hf G10 directly into FCPX. Before I used ClipWrap. There is no need for the step in workflow anymore.

Hi CtsSnooze. I'm a videojournalist having some issues with my new set up and I think you seem to know what you're talking about...wonder if you can help

On my first big export I'm having real blurring on movement, basically a kind of shadow on anything which has moved.

I shot in AVCHD and the .mts was automatically changed to a .mov h264 on import. It's all 1080i. So I edited my sequence doing this, and now need to deliver an original quality output for broadcast. I've been asked to deliver ProRes.

But exporting ProRes via the Share function (I have compressor, but need to use the 'roles' function to ensure two audio tracks), leaves me with very nasty movement shadows. I tested DV PRO50 as well, that's almost as bad (if not the same)

Not sure where to go with this....Any help appreciated!

Can you post a screen shot of what you're seeing?
