Clam Down...Apple says missing features coming soon.

I am sorry that all the "pros" are over reacting to the release of FCPX. Instead of being civil they have been quite rude and dumb. If all you guys clam down a second and read the news you would know that almost every single missing pro feature for FCPX will become availible via update rather soon. Apple and several news outlets have made this very clear. SDI, EDL, XML. All those features are coming very soon. Maybe they should not have released it so soon, for that they might deserve a bit of scorn, but the stuid ranting needs to stop. You people are supposed to be professionals and you are acting like children.

Complain away as much as you want. Demand the features we need. But try doing so in a way that doesn't make you come off looking like and a@@.

All this crying from you all is going to cause the forums to become a "**** and moan" station. I mean ****, maybe FCP X isn't as good as the previous release, I am sure that Apple is reading these posts and they are working on some updates tpo better assist you (the ********). Just relax and give it a week or two.

What you are saying is: Apple knowingly released an inferior product, if not for the forums, it would never know what video pros really want but it does not really care, updates may come or may not.

Insanely better? More like an insane waste of time!!! With FCP 7 I go to the HD I want and create a folder for my video project. Everything about that project is stored in that folder. The FCP project, the scratch folder, all of it. When I am completely done with the project, and have mastered and archived it, I can just delete that folder on my media drive, and that's it. And I can take that one folder and burn it to a 50 gb blue ray disc or a portable drive for long term storage. If I ever need to work on my project again, it's all in that one folder.

With FCPX you're saying that I would have to go to the "Final Cut Events" folder and hunt and peck to delete the files like I used to with Avid? What a huge waste of time.

No more sequences? That's a horrible Idea!!! I have projects where I will produce several different videos for the same client using a lot of the same material, graphics, music, interviews and such.

In FCP 7 I create a new project, gather all my source material in one project, and edit 4 or 5 videos from that source material using different sequences. Now you're telling me with FCPX I have to create a new project and re-gather all of my material every time I want to create a separate video??? Am I understanding what you are saying correctly? If I am, THAT'S A HUGE WASTE OF TIME!!!!!!!! Time is one thing an editor never has enough of.

It's sort of hard to explain, and it is a lot different, so I am probably not communicating correctly.

First, I forgot how Avid just "throws" everything into the Avid Media Files folder. FCP X does NOT do this. It is same in the sense that all the files MUST live under the folder "Final Cut Events" similar to how Avid files must live under "Avid Media Files" folder. The difference, however, is FCP X puts the files under even more folders. It is actually very organized in Finder.

I completely agree with you that it is very dumb how Avid just throws it all in there unorganized, which is one reason I really don't like Avid.

I took a screenshot of the filestructure. See if that makes sense:

All of those folders and files FCP X created and organized on its own. I did not create any of those files or folders. I simply designated my drive and imported.

Referring to your sequences, I think you are misunderstanding. I will clear something up:

**The term "Project" is NOT what you know from FCP 7**

It is somewhat confusing, since you are used to Projects as being your main file in which everything you do is stored. The term "Project" is now more similar to "Sequence". I say similar because the whole program is so different, it is difficult to relate any one thing to be identical to FCP 7 (well, except maybe the selector and blade tool, of course, but even those I think can act differently depending on the circumstance).

Hopefully I helped clear that up.

Um, not really. I don't want my "Project" to become a "Sequence". A project for me serves a much greater purpose than just editing one video. Today I am working on 6 different sequences out of one project. How would I do that on FCPX?

Thanks for the screen shot, but it looks a lot more convaluted than it needs to be. Why make the things that need to be simple more complicated, and dumb down the details where MORE control over detail is needed?

It's not a knock on you, I just don't get it.

It is our hope that Apple is reading these discussion boards to not just improve FCPX, but hopefully abandon it altogether and re-continue their highly successful FCP-line.

Not happening. FCP was not killed by FCPX, but by QuickTime X. It is now up to Apple to decide how much effort to put into integration with professional hardware/software and whether to leave it to third parties.

I have been a pro editor for many years. I got my hands on FCP v1 at a TV station in Providence, RI, and fell in love with it. I have used it ever since. When I heard they were going to re-invent FCP, I was very excited. I love innovation. About 6 months ago, I was asked to create a course on iMovie, which I had never really used. As I was making the tutorials, I began thinking.... "I like how they do that....", "This is an interesting feature....", "I wish this was in FCP...".

When FCPX came out, I couldn't wait to try it. I had already read dozens of reviews saying, "no multicam...", "no backward support...", etc. However, I decided to give it a try. I had a fairly basic project of an attorney answering a bunch of questions, where each question would be it's own short video. So far I REALLY like working in FCPX! I like the way you can seamlessly do audio and color work, I like the new layout (takes a minute to get used to), and I like the way the effects are laid out. I have found that working in the new FCPX was actually quicker!

Do I expect to run into missing features? yes, but I haven't yet. I will miss all my plugins. However, if thats all I have to endure for a fast, modern editor, I am fine with that. Besides, FCP7 has not stopped working.

@mikhol -- you're right!

@frlane -- cool, glad FCPX works for your workflow. Chances are Apple's targeting users like yourself who require an all-in-one solution.

We do all our coloring in After Effects, Flame, or DaVinci, VFX composition in After Effects, Nuke, or Flame, and sound design in a ProTools studio.

Unfortunately FCPX does not work with our workflow.

Where I work, we want to buy more licenses. We cannot. Places that want to expand their FCP availability to editors have 2 choices: a) buy in to other programs (Avid / Premiere etc) b) piracy. Neither option is acceptable here. Outstanding! Would it have been so hard to at least GIVE WARNING that FCP 7 was to be immediately EOL? I mean, even Microsoft does that.

There was such a big uproar over the replaced iMovie, that Apple had to begin offering the old iMovie again for free, so maybe if there is enough backlash they will have to at least make the FCS Suite available again for a short period of time.

Check out Apple's Web site on Lion.

Under Quicktime Player it includes.

Merge clips

QuickTime Player lets you combine multiple clips into a single movie. Simply drag the clips you want into a movie window — QuickTime Player automatically scales or crops them so they match the dimensions of the movie.

Export audio only

The new Export Audio Only feature produces an AAC audio track that’s perfect for listening on the go or posting audio-only files to the web.

Rotate clips

If you open a video and it’s upside down or sideways, just rotate it to make it right.
