itunes problem. "Quicktime was not found."

itunes will not open. I get the following error: "Quicktime was not found. Quicktime is required to run itunes. Please uninstall itunes, then install itunes again. Using Windows 7, 64x OS and itunes 10.3. I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled everything apple on the computer, with no luck. Itunes will open after the reinstall, but will give the error when I open itunes again.

I have the same problem, also on windows 7, x64. I've installed quicktime separately, gone through their complete uninstall and reinstall process multiple times, and so on. I even found some bizarre articles suggesting various system utilities were incompatible, which I can't imagine would be true, assuming they hire professional programmers to work on their products, but nonetheless, I tried uninstalling every conceivable related thing and still I get the same behavior. I install iTunes and it works for the post-install use. Then for all future uses it gives me this useless error message with no clues about debugging, "quicktime was not found." I have the quicktime folder on my system path, I've made quicktime the default player for .mov files, I've tried launching iTunes with quicktime open, yielding that semi-comical error message-- all to no avail. Do they really not have access to a windows machine for testing purposes? I don't live in an iHome or have access to the iChannel on an iTV so maybe I'm out of the loop. I thought the iphone 4 was supposed to be usable by non-apple cultists.

Good to know. That suggests a weird issue with the %path% environmental variable.

Path contains a list of folders and the location of Quicktime is the last in the list. The problem is that if any of the folders can't be found, iTunes gives up and never reaches the location of Quicktime. (This can happen if, for example, a network drive has been specified in %path%, but you aren't connected to that network at present.)

If this is the problem you will need to edit the Path variable, but we need to know if this is necessary first.

In order to check this, type cmd into your Start menu search box and click cmd under Programs.

The command prompt window will open.

Type the following at the command prompt and press return:

cd my documents

This puts you in the (my) documents folder, next copy&paste the following into the cmd window and press return:

echo %path% >path.txt

This will place the contents of the %path% variable in a text file called Path in (My) Documents. You will need to check that each folder in the list actually exists.

In order to save time you can copy&paste each folder in the list into the address bar of Windows Explorer. You will get an error if the folder doesn't exist.

Make a note of any that don't exist and post back.

Hi b sorry to but in, just a quick correction.

For WIndows 7 you need

cd documents

not cd my documents

This command does not produce an error and it looks as though it has worked, but if you do a dir you get a file not found error. It is confusing because Windows Explorer will show My Documents if you expand Documents.

I think Vista is the same, only XP needs my documents.

Ho hum 😮

I just tested it in Vista and Windows 7 and although my first statement is correct, the file does in fact appear in the right place if your instructions are followed. From memory it didn't seem to work last time I tried, but I must have messed it up somehow. It also works with "cd documents".

Sorry to have butted in.🙂
