APPLE - GIVE US OUR MONEY BACK!!!!!

This is not a Final Cut Pro piece of editing software.

This is iMovie with some enhanced features, hence the ability to import older iMovie projects,

but not Final Cut Pro projects.

I HAVE SPENT THE ENTIRE DAY BEING BOUNCED AROUND FROM THE APP STORE PEOPLE,

TO THE ITUNES PEOPLE TO THE FINAL CUT PEOPLE.

Each time they tell me another department handles what I need to have done.

When you misrepresent a product as poorly as this, people will not stand for it.

This is a joke of a "pro" app and Apple should stand up and take the punch to the stomach.

Apple you built your rep on making great products, maybe this one made sense somewhere in the

test labs, but in real life it leaves millions of professional editors who rely on FCP everyday to make a

living.

Take FCP 7, add in 64bit and I'll give you $300. Keep everything else the same for all I care, but this

app (FCPX) is completely useless for any form of professional editing.

I take your point Richardsonic, FCP X will probably work for you. If you are shooting on a card-based format and doing it all yourself in your machine, then you are in the same space as the wedding videographers and church AV guys that this app seems to be aimed at - makers of self-contained projects. I mean that with no disrespect - these are worthy tasks. But since v3, this app has earned its stripes through what you dismiss as the broadcast space. It credibility rested on its ability to support complex workflows on projects of scale. It no longer does that.

In 2003 Walter Murch cut Cold Mountain on v3, with three assistants sharing media. He could not do that with this release. We cut and finished a national network series on it for TVNZ in 2004. We can't do that with this version.

As others point out, this app may have a future, it certainly has a past in iDVD, but its timeline has had a middlectomy. The present is missing. It's not currently useful for the professional market it was sold into.

By all means change and adapt to suit its workflows. But I don't expect my clients and networks to listen very hard to Apple and its fanboys, of which I am one, when I can't give them what they pay us for.

Many here are missing the point. By adopting a totally file-based, tape-free career path and pretending that gives aspiring cutters an easier path to a career in editing, they're hobbling themselves before they start. The projects they get will be lightweight, the cred attached to their skill set miniscule. They might as well stick with iDVD and cut their reel with that. Real shows won't be made with this app for some time to come, and their CV will be sparse. This is a tool for home movies and the marketing department. Which are substantial markets in themselves, but nothing like what we had.

FCP editors have long had to stand up against those who insisted real shows are made on Avid. Right now, they're right - the Avid boards are a gloatfest. Final Cut Pro X is a tool for enthusiastic amateurs. Enjoy!

It's difficult for us to ascertain if the program will work for our production flows or not

unless we use it.

Since Apple doesn't do "try before buy", our only option is to purchase it.

So, a liberal refund policy is necessary for this business model.

In our case, FCPX won't work for us until they address what's been pointed out here

(XML, EDL, OMF, etc.).

After reading all the controversy, I stopped by the Emeryville Apple Store on April 24, several days after it was released. The Apple person told me it was available through the App store, but was not loaded on any of their Mac's in the strore. Just wanted to see it for myself, but no luck. Since I don't output to tape or use some of the Pro functions missing, I am interested if it has the potential to meet my needs. Obviously a big downer is the lack of its ability to open or convert FCP7 files. Also have not figured out how to deal with the lack of more than one version, per project. So will it be a revolutionary/evolutionary product to replace FCP7 or a dead end for those used to the power of FCP7? Maybe it will be clear in 6 months or a year, it certainly isn't clear now. Inspite of my curiousity, I waiting.

Jeff - It seems disingenuous to say someone had to buy FCPX to find out that it didn't support EDL, OMF and all of the other things causing the collective indigestion here. I had an email from Creative Cow by 10am the morning of the release with a review that talked about all of the missing features. There was endless righteous indignation on these forums almost immediately. Even the nitwit David Pogue pointed out these things in the New York Times. Of course people would have had to wait a whole day after the release to find that out from him.

Regardless, I understand everyone's disappointment regarding the bigger picture. I'm just suggesting that we take some responsibility for our own (perhaps rash) purchasing decisions and get over the "Give us our money back!!!" cry-baby routine. Frankly, I'd be embarrassed to admit publicly that I had made such a foolish decision.

I take it that you're a lone-gun.

We have many software products in our workflow .. and our pattern has been fairly consistent ...

get the new version .. assign somebody to evaluate it .. determine whether it will work (or

not). Sometimes we decide to delay deployment. In the case of FCPX, we determined that the

timeline of the the product meeting our workflow requirements was longer than our event-horizon.

We're not going to rely on Creative Cow or any other forum to make that determination for us.

We will read blogs, but the accuracy of information is not what we would base decisions upon.

If there's a trial version, then we get those. In the case of FCPX, they do not provide trials.

So, we bought the program with the expectation that we would be refunded if it did not meet

our needs. That is still our expectation, even if the Mac Store is being a little dysfunctional.

Based on *our* evaluation, we decided to re-tool to another platform. If somebody told me that

they made a "go-no-go" decision based on Creative Cow, that would be a problem.

I don't think it's belly-aching to ask for a refund. The product did not function in a way that

we could use it.

Frankly, with this degree of change, Apple should have provided a "trial" path and perhaps they

will consider doing so in the future.

All of you so called "pro's" need to stop crying, and belly aching like children that did not get your ice creme after dinner. Apple did what they did, and believe this Apple isn't just going to toss you junk app knowing how much business they do with FCP. Lion is going to be released next month therefore the next updates and patches to FCPX are on the way. Apple is a great company and they WILL NOT crap on their customers. Just be patient and chill out. Keep using FCP 7 until after Lion's release.

That is precisely what they did. It may (eventually) catch up.

We are getting lambasted for buying the program and being disappointed. What's being suggested is that

we buy the program and then wait for it to get better.

That seems more foolish to me.
