How do I reconnect media in FCP-X?

Did you try dragging and dropping the movie files from the Finder to the disconnected clips in the Event library? It worked for me. It might depend on how they got disconnected. Here's my story:

1. Imported Canon T2i movie clips from SD card in USB reader using FCP X Import File command. I did not check the copy files checkbox in the import window so I ended up with links in the Event folder to the flash media (but I didn't realize it yet).

2. The files went offline when the flash card was unmounted.

3. No problem, using the Finder I copied the movie files from the SD card over the top of the links in the Events folder - same names so it replaced the links (after asking).

4. Videos now show red where the audio waveform should be in FCP X. Inspector says clip missing. But they still play. Hmmmm. They're missing but they play.

5. Drag and drop movie files in Finder from the Events folder to the same event in FCP X. (Basically reimporting directly over the existing clips). Red goes away. Clips no longer missing.

Try it and let us know if my experience was an anomaly.

iMovie can't relink re-link media to my knowledge., especially maually relink. Am I missing something?

You are able to reimport missing clips. So for example, say you didn't copy files into the event when you imported them and you changed their physical location on your drive. If FCPX no longer sees them, you can reimport them into FCPX and it will automatically reassosiate them in your events library.

That's fine, but there's still no way to REPLACE missing or modified media. If I'm working on an After Effects render and went back and changed something, there's no way to simply replace the existing clip in my events library with the new version. I literally have to import it as a brand new clip, delete every edit I made with the original and cut in the new version every single time I make a change.

That. Stinks. Period.

I found workaround!!!!

It only works the leangth of the footage is exact same.

In my case, I color corrected entire clip with FCP 7 and exported it.

Gave exact same name, same length, same timecode.

But didn't reconnect since there's no reconnect or replace with timecode in FCP X.

BUT, I could successfully replace the red marked clip with this new QT I exported from FCP 7.

1) Right click on the off-line media.

2) Choose "Open in timeline" from the dropdown menu.

3) In the timeline, you replace it with new clip.

Here, you can see your IN-OUT is highlighted and the rest of the clip is grayed out.

4) Go back to the timeline. It's replaced! It even keeps my effects there.

So only clip get replace and keeps the effects. This is not bad!

First I was freaking out since there's no reconnect media.

But this way, at least, I didn't need to do re-edit them in.

The only thing is you have to do one clip by clip!!

I hope they fix this reconnect media thing soon!!

But now I don't hear any of the cynics swallow their snobby remarks about this socalled 'beta software'.

I think it's pretty good. And promising.

Can you describe the steps to 'replace it with the new clip'? I'm not following how you do this.

Yes, there are missing steps in this procedure. I cannot reproduce it with the instructions given. It would also be good to know if this is replace for media in the Events folder or if the media is linked to Events folder. Is the file swapped out while FCPX is closed or open? Is the file imported back into the fCPX event? Does that leave two instances of the file, one dead in the browser and the new one, and a dead link in the Events folder as well?

Hi hafken, replace procedure is as follows:

1) import your new clip you want to reconnect into event

2) go to the steps I wrote above 1, 2

3) REPLACE : here, you drag the new clip from event folder onto

the timeline footage and as soon as you do that, you see a drop down menu saying

Replace, Replace from start, Replace from end etc...

If the footage is exact same length or starting point is same, Replace or Replace from start,

i think it doesn't matter. There's detail instruction and information about different "Replace" function

in Help in FCP X and you can do keyword search for it.

4) once this is done, you can go back to your working timeline and you see

the footage is replaced with your new clip.

As I wrote before, you have to do it shot by shot. But at least you don't need to find

exact in-point and overwrite process. It's just drag and drop so much easier process

and it works well when your old footage and new footage is exact same length.

Also, as you see in the picture I inserted, in the timeline, you see the IN-OUT section

I'm using in the timeline is highlighted and and the rest is grayed out.

All the effects are kept and you don't need to recreate or copy paste the effects.

Which is probablly new. I don't think 7 did it.

In 7, when you reconnect media, you had to recreate the effects...

Hummm, I forgot how it was.

But my hope is for apple to combine both X and 7 so that it will be super editing software!

I tried replacing old footage in event by opening it in timeline and do the same procedure of "Replace".

But that didn't affect updaing clips in my edit timline.

So I had to go clip by clip within timeline as I wrote above.

So yes, the dead footage stays in event and new clip you imported will also stays in event.

You can replace the offline footage with new clip you imported into the even folder within the timeline.

So the reconnect process concept is a bit different from conventional way. It's more like "Replace" instead

of "Reconnect".

But at least it can be work-around until hopefully apple fix this problem.

I didn't know how to use this response system... I wrote down more detail with picture. I hope that explains more...

All I can do is shake my head in dis-belief. Am I dreaming?

I can't just give up.... but I don't understand something. Perhaps you can help me Tom.

1: I save all my files on an external and in their respective folders.

2: I filtered and added keywords.

3: I created a project and it played fine.

- I quit the app -

4: I opened it up and ONLY the video files I used in the project are missing.

5: I have my project saved on the same hard drive as my original video files.

6: When I right click the video file in the project > Reveal in finder - The shortcut file plays the original just fine.

7: When I drag the original back into the event area all it does is duplicate the video file.

8: When I click on the video file and then Modify Even References all I get is the attached.
