I am trying to set up a APC Smart-UPS SC1500VA on my XServe running 10.4.4 and I can't seem to get the server to recognize the UPS. The UPS works fine on my Windows machines but when I plug it into the Mac I can't get the "Show UPS status in the menu bar" check box that I am supposed to get on the Energy Saver control panel. The APC client doesn't work on 10.4.4 as I understand from my numerous calls to APC.
Might not be much help but if it's any encouragement to you it should work. I use APC units with 2 servers (a G5 Tower and an Xserve G5) and they both show up as soon as I plug them in. I don't use APC's software.
Maybe try other troubleshooting tricks like using a different USB cable or logging in from another account and see if it works there?
We've been talking of Mac OS X
Server and not the Client version. I don't know if Tiger Client can do this as well, but Server definitely does. I'd be disappointed if that was left out of the client though.

Dunno if it helps, but my APC Smart-UPS 750 XL just worked when I plugged it into a USB port of my new XServe G5 running 10.4.6. Finding the list box to select the UPS in the Energy Saver panel was the hard part...
In my experience with Mac OS X Server and APC USVs they actually do restart correctly as soon as power is back and the UPS has recharged enough. May depend on your "Restart after Power Failure" setting in Energy Saver though.
