I opened my 2008 Macbook this am to find that my keyboard has been reconfigured and has some chinese characters. It is difficult to add punctuation because some of it is not there. How can I reset my keyboard to default? I clicked :reset:. Imput Source is - US keyboard.

Go to system prefs/language & text/input sources and make sure that ONLY the box for US is checked.
What do you see when you type "asdfg"? Copy/paste it here.
Please excuse my delay. With the 'changed' keyboard I seem to have changed my Apple ID Password to something I didn't recognize. prior to posting my problem, one of my attempts at correction was to restart my macbook. It did not correct the problem. After I posted the message and received answers, the next morning, the problem had corrected itself. I wish I had "Grab" a screenshot of the keyboard. It had 2 extra keys - one on either side of the spacebar. The extra keys are not there any more.
Oh! asdfg But other keys and there 'Shift' mode had changed. Example - 'Shift' 2was not '@' but was - I think - a dash. Made it hard to enter an email address while trying to reset an Apple ID password.
I think that somehow - a different keyboard driver installed. Virus? Intruder? Hard drive hic-cup?
All seems to be OK today so - Thanks for the input but I can't tell where to go from here!

I was wrong. All is not OK today. All dates have oriental characters in them.
Beside 'Spotlight' the date is similar to '6⽤24⽇⾁⺔㆘⺘2:44'. Sometimes when I restart my MacBook, the "CapsLock' key is lit and its function is inversed! What is with this thing?
Have you looked at system prefs/language & text/formats to make sure you have US for the Region?
In system prefs/language & text/ihput sources = US only. No other languages checked.

Read my post again. NOT input sources. Look at the Formats tab instead.
Reread and corrected. Dates and times are now back to US English. Thanks Tom!
One must wonder how it was changed in the first place. I did load up Growley Notes and Curio on the day before the problem started but the problems were not noted until the next day. They still do not seem to be related!
I have this same problem but cant find the format section in OS Mavericks. How can I correct this problem on the newer OS?

Sorry, I goofed. For date in wrong language, it system prefs/language & region/advanced/format language
My bad, I should have mentioned that I have the same keyboard problems (punctuation marks moved around the keyboard and the caps lock light is on when caps is off). I do not have the date problem, or at least not yet. Is this a different issue?

Yes, that is a different issue.
Could you provide some specific examples of keys which do not do what they are supposed to, and what they are typing instead? Is asdfg normal?
Is US the ONLY thing you have listed in system prefs/keyboard/input sources?
