if i but a power adapter in england can i plug it directly into my Verizon iPad or do i need a power converter?

You only need an adapter to connect to the mains.
The power supply is auto-ranging for worldwide use.
Apple sells a terrific travel kit.
I don't know where you are but if you're in the US your iPad will probably catch fire and melt. The voltage in Europe is 220/240.
Nothing is going to catch fire.
So plug my us plug into a 3 prong adaptor for Great Britain and then plug into the wall.

The plug adapter converts the physical connection to the charger. The iPad charger is worldwide capable....the connector slides off so you can change it when in another country that may require a different physical connection.
Don't be afraid: as well as electrickery, we also have running water and piped gas! :-)
Most people's, and certainly Apple's power supplies are universal voltage. If you can get the plug pins to fit, you're good to go.
