Updated to 10.6.8, now I can't print

Have run applejack, reset printing system & reinstalled printer (FujiXerox 5065II with Fiery RIP), but the print Queue just keeps pausing. The error_log gives this: printer-state-message="/usr/libexec/cups/backend/lpd failed"

Does anyone have a similar problem or found a workaround?

thanks.

If you guys are using IPP may I suggest the following. It worked for me.

1. Remove the printer from printer list in system preferences.

2. Re-add the printer with the IP address

3. Add the letters "ipp" to the text box labeled "Queue" (DO NOT LEAVE BLANK)

4. Re-select your printer driver.

5. Click Add

This solved the issue of the automatic pausing of the print job, and showing a tray is empty error code.

Performed this fix on 6 computers all printing over a network to a Konica Minolta printer.

My guess is that the update messed up the way that the print queue was being handled.

EDIT: This was on 5 computers with 10.6.8, and 1 computer with 10.4.11 (weird). They all work now, though.

Just a quick update - installed Apple's latest software update for Epson printers - version 2.8 and all working fine for me with my Epson RX640! Will give it a little while before overwriting my old backup but looking good so far.

Obviously if updating I recommend making sure to make a backup of your current working setup and keep it handy for a while just in case.

Happy printing!

Just got another update from Apple for 10.6.8 and had printer problems again. Every update I have installed for the mac has given me nothing but problems with my Epson printer. Had to reinstall the drivers and used a update patch a friend of mine told me about. The update that you want is in www.apple.com/support under the snow leopard 10.6.8 combo updater. Getting to be annoying Apple, update and then printer problems!!!! Hey tech guys at Apple, get on the ball and get it right.

No not on Lion yet. Not hearing very good things about Lion right now. Not planing on using icloud anytime soon. The sad thing is that this latest update seems to continue a trend that has been going on since the Leopard came out. To think, I left Microsoft Windows so that I would have fewer problems. Looks like Apple is following MS footsteps, the bigger they become the more problems they have. Get your act together Apple!!!!

Same problem. Macbook Pro mid 2011, and a new Brother HL-2270DW printer. Printer was recognized wirelessly, worked via USB, but "printer paused" appeared every time I tried to print wirelessly (Bonjour). This is with 10.6.8 after the update.

I tried amending the PPD as advised elsewhere but that did not work. I was despairing at the thought of reinstalling system software, using Pacifist, etc.

Then I tried the solution offered by "ostrichtom" above,

After installing 10.6.8 on my 2011 MacBook Pro, I, too, had the printing problem - my Canon PIXMA MP990 would time out after each print. I print to it wirelessly. I was uncomfortable replacing a file in a hidden System folder, so I tried the other suggestion somewhere on this posting. I went to the Print & Fax pref pane and CTRL-clicked on the printer. I then selected Reset Printing System. I then had to reload the printer and reset its paper handling and ink preferences because the original ones had been deleted. However, now my printing is running is it did before the 10.6.8 update. All this is using Apple's own method of fixing, rather than applying a kluge.

This worked just beautifully. Haven't yet tried to see if this prints wirelessly from a Windows machine. Thank you ostrichtom for reminding us that sometimes the tools are right there in the Apple software.

Apologies if this is a double post, but Xerox have a couple of patches for Snow Leopard that may be relevant to some people:

If the provided links do not work, the original links can be found on the Xerox Support site at http://www.support.xerox.com, under Support & Drivers, then Drivers & Downloads. Select Mac OS X as your operating system from the drop down list.

Mac OS X Update for 10.6 (for Fiery / EFI print servers only, located in Drivers section)

LINK

This utility application modifies the “permissions” on the Fiery CUPS filter file and folder so that users can print on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) with Fiery Driver 2.9 and 3.0.
Mac OS X 10.6.8 Patch (located under Patches, possibly not available on all printer pages, this link was off the Xerox Digital Colour Press 700 page)
While we are waiting for an official patch to be released from Apple to address the CUPS printing issue, we have made this temporary fix available on the Drivers & Downloads pages. This is not a permanent solution and is not intended for 10.7 / Lion, but will correct the problem for our products in 10.6.8. If you have problems installing this fix, or otherwise, please contact the Support Center.

FIery Express Driver for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

For anyone else using EFI / Fiery printing, they have released an Express Driver for Lion / 10.7 while the full driver is in development. I have it on good information that the full driver is not far away but if you have Lion and need to print to a Fiery driven printer, you will need this driver:

Download location: Support (Requires registration + login, I receive little to no spam mail, if any) -> EFI Software -> Fiery Express Driver for Mac OS X 10.7

PDF guide is also located here

Hope that helps,

Luke

Have an HP F380 Deskjet - working great till I updated to 10.6.8. I haven't seen a fix for this machine. I've tried a lot of the above suggestions with the same luck - i.e. the printer prints....but in slow motion...it takes about 2 full minutes for it to feed and print in simple draft mode. I'm really anxious to have a solution.

Anyone??????? My original HP driver on the disc supplied by HP never loaded so I've been using the built in driver on my iMac - not super savvy so any solution should be step by step.

Thanks.
