Rust on smart cover?

Walk it into the nearest Apple Store and ask them to take a look...

Mine has a little bit of that, I haven't done anything (I've had it for a month) and it still works fine.

I am having the exactly the same problem, it seems to start on the contact point of the cover and passes onto the iPad.....a visit to westfield is on the cards

I also have the exactly similar defect only after a couple of days usage in office environment. This is no way "normal", but poor material / design quality on apple smart cover.

So should this be replaced? I have the same problem and its annoying to clean up.

I thought I was the only person with this issue. Well I'm going to visit a store over the weekend and find out what's happening.

Went into my apple store last night in Pittsburgh and they very quickly replaced both the smartcover and the ipad2 with NO hassles what so ever. Even offered me a switch of color cover if I wanted.

Unfortunately I can see this being a design flaw, due to the fact the cover and iPad are magnetically held together, there has to be a ferrous material to hold the magnetic bond.

And the result of ferrous materials oxidizing is rust.

I had the exact same issue, however not as lucky as you GEMicher, my store in NYC told me that I must have caused it and then proceeded to give me a chemistry lesson...water causes rust blah blah blah. Needless to say, I am waiting for a call back from the regional manager.

I had same issue. Genius told me unless I change the laws of physics aluminum will not corrode. So he just gave me a new cover. Not happy at all. I only had the iPad for 3 months as a birthday gift.

Well just to say I took my ipad2 back after buying it on launch day to the apple store and I showed them this thread . They replaced the pad straight away.....but not the cover as I brought that elsewhere, I got a replacement cover from the store I brought it in afterwards too. So my message is don't let them say this is not a problem, demand a replacement!!!

No aluminum will not corrode, although it will oxidize and it is not magnetic. There MUST me iron/steel somewhere in order for a magnet to bond to the iPad. Those laws of physics will get you every time.

I've had the same problem. Went into my Apple Store, the guy said "I've never seen this before" and that it must be my fault, but then replaced the iPad and cover without any problems. Now, just weeks later, it's happened again and I have been soooooo careful with it this time. I don't drink near it, eat near it, swim (?) near it... nothing. I'm just ditching the Smartcover and using something else. I can't be bothered going in and being told it's my fault because it can't have happened twice.
