After the latest update, 'finder quit unexpectedly' straight away on startup

Hi guys

So basically, straight after I installed the 10.6.8 update, on the restart I get the message 'finder quit unexpectedly' straight away. The message pops back up if I close it, and it's still there every time I restart. Not sure if this is relevant, but before the update it had been very laggy - something i was hoping this update would fix! Hopefully this is easy to fix, as it's pretty much bricked the laptop.

It could be the com.apple.finder.plist that is corrupt. Delete it from the Users > your name >Library > Preferences folder.

I'm new to the Mac community and have a Macbook pro 15" purchased about 9 months ago having this same problem after an update. My computer keeps giving me the "finder quit unexpectedly" alert and many of my applications won't work and everything on my desktop is missing. Safari does work as I'm using it to type this. I have tried downloading the OS update combo 10-1.6.8 directly from the apple store (instead of the software update option that I clicked the first time) but after the download is complete I can't get it to install. I'm feeling really stupid and I see all these options for using a "terminal window" and opening in "Safe mode" but honestly I don't know how to do either. Is anyone ambitious enough to try to help me through this? I'd be so grateful for any help.
