I'm having the same issue as others in this forum. After the upgrade to 10.6.8, I'm having intermittent issues with optical audio out to my Logitech Z-5500 speakers. I have reverted to version 1.9.9f12 of AppleHDA.kext (the version from 10.6.7), and the issues related to the 10.6.8 upgrade have ceased. However, I now get intermittent kernel panics.

Granted, I have no business mixing and matching kernel extensions with different versions of OS X. I hope Apple acknowledges this new bug soon and releases a patch. The issue is ruining my home entertainment experience.
My two cents,
