Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?

Hi everyone,

i have just upgrade my system to 10.6.8 and everything work fine except my audio thru optical output. I have pluged Logitech Z-5500 Digital to my MacBook Pro's optical sound output and my problem now is that, when i play some HD movie vith DolbyDigital AC3 ore DTS, it plays fine but when i stop watching movie and close VLC, no other sounds play.. no itunes, no standard stereo movies ect.. it plays only AC3 od DTS sound track.. so when i want to listen some music, i must restart MBP and it plays again everything until i open again movie with 5.1 track....

any solution to fix it?

thanks in advance

Thanks Woodmeister50. I think ARD is the issue with the remote connection.

As a side note do you know what Audio Midi Setup does to a Mac? Since the audio issues have happened I've been looking at the movies I've ripped and I'm not 100% sure that they are ripped properly. I play a movie back with QT and it says AAC 2 channels and the stereo says PCM 2 channels. I set the audio output to 8 channels with Audio Midi Setup the stereo says PCM 4/3/0.1, but never Dolby Digital. If I play the movie with iTunes it says Dolby Digital 5.1 and not AAC. The stuff I read about QT not outputing 5.1 is about 4 years old, so its hard to tell what is what. What Audio Midi Setup does to a output stream and so forth.

Thanks

Finally, after reseting and restoring my Mac Mini with Snow Leopard 10.6.3 first and upgraded to 10.6.7 later I hadn't got any sound through the optical out in both cases (no stereo and no 5.1 AC3 or DTS), in fact the audio port doesn't emit any light, so I think ther is a hardware problem

How I've got this problem since two months ago when the Mac still had OSX 10.6.7, I've decided to carry my mac to the reseller again (it's the third time), they told me they are going to talk to Apple to replace the mac if they can't fix the problem.

Dan, to pass through Dolby and DTS to your receiver,

the Audio Midi Setup should be set to 20 or 24 bit stereo

(I have mine set to 24 bit). Setting it to multichannel only

works (supposedly) if the source material is multichannel

PCM or AAC. However, most players don't support

this directly.

The audio issues with 10.6.8 really have me peaved.

Why did they FIX something that WASN'T BROKE???????

Hello,

same problem for me, with my MacMini 2010. No AC3 or DTS with VLC through HDMI after using itunes or DVD player with stereo. The only solution was to restart... with a MacMini used for Home Cinema and also as home server... bad solution.

I tried to reinstall 10.6.3 from the DVD delivered with the mac. After 3 times, it was good (2 first try stopped with a restart after 5 mn ??). I applied the combo update 10.6.7 after and now all work well :-) very happy : no change on the mac (files, app), good sound and video to the Yamaha by HDMI out (to Cabasse speakers and projector), stereo, Dolby, DTS, all.

Last, I use mainly VLC for the movies. They provide a new version : 1.1.11 with a some bugs fixed of which one is "Resolved conflict between iTunes and VLC with regard to Media Key handling". I cannot try with 10.6.8 (I revert to 10.6.7). Some connection with the audio issue ? Somebody has tried this update ?

10.6.8 also broke something in Core Audio, at least for the USB audio interface I'm using (E-MU TrackerPRE) - resulting in intermittent pops while recording in Logic Pro. Reverting back to 10.6.7 fixed the issue. This on a Mac Mini.

I re installed SL & the combo update to 10.6.7 last night, less than an hour , i would say go ahead an do it, its not worth waiting on a fix IMHO

All my mini does is run PLEX so it was annoying me intensly for 3 weeks , wish i had done it in the first week now

Once they fix it you can always do the updates later ?

I cant see me putting 10.7 on my home theater mini TBH , its simpley not needed to run PLEX

Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?
