Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?

Lion is out. I am downloading... Have you guys tried?? I know it has a low or null probability of a fix... but just to make it clear for everyone.

I still have the bug with Lion. It has been 3 weeks by now that I cant use anymore my mac mini to watch 5.1 movies and Apple still does not care at all!!

What a strange idea to acquire lion ... always give money to Apple ... this is no longer seen anything that has Apple do not like their loyal customers.

This is pretty infuriating. I signed up just to comment on this issue. Apple, YOU NEED TO FIX THIS. Your new OS is useless for almost your entire Mac Mini customer base. Can't even imagine what Pro Audio engineers are going through with their harware needs.

Updating to Lion did not fix the issue on my MBP :-(

Yep, same here. Broke with 10.6.8 and is still broken in 10.7 Lion 😟

Apple, please, fix the digital audio, it has been several weeks and it's driving us nuts! (and it hasn't been the first time either btw...)

I agree totally. The MacMini is totally useless to me without 5.1 audio. Its disgusting that apple is taking so long to fix the problem. I'm tempted to replace my macs with pcs and save a lot of money and frustration.

Formated my 2008 MacBook white and installed snow leopard 10.6 and i am back with no audio. Starting to guess i gotta a hardware issue. The sound works only with headphones and when there is nothing connected to the audio jack i can see the red Light on. That is a pain...

Anyone can guess what is the deal?

yes, the same problem in vienna !! Apple, please, fix that. The People with digital audio at home = the best customers and rich !!

I can confirm the same, after installing Lion on my Mac Mini Late 2009, the AppleHDA.kext 2.1.1 still breaks digital output. I had to repeat the steps to install the AppleHDA.kext from the 10.6.7 combo update.

If past fixes for audio issues involving the MacMini are any

yardstick, it probably won't be until 10.7.2 till anything gets

fixed, if ever.

10.6.4 broke iTunes purchased HD material. If audio playback

set for surround, video stuttered. If set for stereo no issue.

10.6.6 Issue finally fixed, but broke any video with Dolby that was

imported to iTunes. Still not fixed.

Beginning to think the Mini is the "ugly sister" no one wants to

mess with.

Yeahh. I did solve my issue and it was not a software deal.

Just sticked a toothpick in my audio out and that turned it off and the regular speaker just came on.

Upgrading to Lion now...

Are you saying that swapping out the AppleHDA.kext worked with Lion? If so, I'll install Lion and give it a try -- swapping in the kext from 10.6.7 fixed my MacMini audio in 10.6.8.

I got the same problem on Lion

I tried many times on many softwares but I got no luck!

I can not watch 5.1 movie from my Mac any more!
