Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?

Hi everyone,

i have just upgrade my system to 10.6.8 and everything work fine except my audio thru optical output. I have pluged Logitech Z-5500 Digital to my MacBook Pro's optical sound output and my problem now is that, when i play some HD movie vith DolbyDigital AC3 ore DTS, it plays fine but when i stop watching movie and close VLC, no other sounds play.. no itunes, no standard stereo movies ect.. it plays only AC3 od DTS sound track.. so when i want to listen some music, i must restart MBP and it plays again everything until i open again movie with 5.1 track....

any solution to fix it?

thanks in advance

Mac mini 2010, upgraded to 10.7 and occasional sound skipping.

Since I use it most of the time as an HTPC with XBMC, it is pretty useless now.

Replacing the kext with the one in the 10.6.7 combo did not help, the hdmi and internal audio outputs disappeared.

Oh well, guess I'm on for 2 hours of reinstalling 10.6.7. Too bad, I bought a Magic Trackpad because I was excited to try Lion. Guess it will have to wait.

Dear Apple, please fix this. Thank you.

The last few posters would be well served by reading the thread. Your questions have already been asked and answered.

@arto65 try following the instructions posted by sebabo on page ten. I, too, lost all audio input/output when trying to replace 10.6.7 AppleHDA.ktext but sebabo's instructions worked flawlessly.

@Sebabo:

I have MBP Early 2011. I tried your method with the file for MBP Early 2011.

In the Lion, the AppleHDA.kext file size is 1.26Gb

But in the package, it was only 5.3Mb

After installing, I have no sound at all.

So I have to restore the AppleHDA.kext from Lion back to MBP and I have sound.

But sure that I have no 5.1 dts or AC3 digital out.

@chungtd

I've only tried this on my Mac Mini, not on a MBP. What I do find peculiar is that you say the AppleHDA.kext version 2.1.1 from Lion was 1.26GB file. Mine was only 9 MB and the one from the 10.6.7 Combo Update is 8.6 Mb in size.

I too had the same issue of no sound when I installed the AppleHDA.kext from the wrong path within the 10.6.7 Combo Update pkg, and the file was smaller than the correct one, though I can't recall its size.

@Cactrot thank you for your comment. And yes, I did read the thread, including sebabo's post. It's not providing any information about how to get the hdmi and internal outputs back up again. I followed sebabo's instructions, but it did not work for my mac mini 2010.

What did you do to get the audio outputs back?

Anyway, I reinstalled 10.6.7, so problem solved I guess. I'll wait for the next 10.7 update.

It's the second time I have to reinstall my mac because of HDMI issues, it's getting old. So long for Mac reliability.

Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?
