Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?

Hi everyone,

i have just upgrade my system to 10.6.8 and everything work fine except my audio thru optical output. I have pluged Logitech Z-5500 Digital to my MacBook Pro's optical sound output and my problem now is that, when i play some HD movie vith DolbyDigital AC3 ore DTS, it plays fine but when i stop watching movie and close VLC, no other sounds play.. no itunes, no standard stereo movies ect.. it plays only AC3 od DTS sound track.. so when i want to listen some music, i must restart MBP and it plays again everything until i open again movie with 5.1 track....

any solution to fix it?

it's outputting sound or it's outputting surround sound, in that it reads your files as dolby digital /II or dts or the like?

Its reading everything I have at 5.1 as 5.1 and putting it through my Denon correctly as surround sound

Anybody tried to plug in an USB external soundcard with 5.1out and assign this card as default audio out in MIDI-Settings?

Maybe the stereo-bug is only present on built in hardware.

I just upgarde my MBP to 10.7.2 (version for developer) but the problem still remains!

I have Lion installed and tried the following without success:

- download Combo Update (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361)

- extract (in Terminal)

xar -x -f MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.7.pkg -C new

ditto -x SUBaseSystemCombo10.6.7.pkg/Payload SUBase

- file: ..SUBase/System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

File Info:

8.455.397 Byte

1.9.9f12, Copyright Apple Inc. 2005-2010

MD5 (version.plist) = 68550ca201e667d9911f22eb48dc5ee5

- backup of original Lion AppleHDA.kext (Ver. 2.1.1)

- delete original Lion AppleHDA.kext

- installed Ver. 1.9.9f12 with Kext Helper b7 (http://cheetha.net/)

- touch /System/Library/Extensions/

- restart of MacOSX Lion

Same problem after the restart. I only use VLC [1]. There is no difference between the two AppleHDA.kext versions.

And btw., this version http://hotfile.com/dl/84331058/0ed56fb/AppleHDA1.9.9f12.zip.html is another.

MD5 (version.plist) = 04b1bb9a22d06819a69056bbd22d9579

I also tried the Hotfile version. No difference. Maybe I have something overlooked.

So, does anybody using the same setup (Lion and VLC) as I am and had success?

This is great news! now do we have to go back to 10.6.7 o .8 and reupgrade to Lion?

Or is there a fix for Lion?

Works for me, too! Fresh 10.6 + 10.6.7 combo and new released 10.6.8 on my mac mini.

Bad i upgraded OSX, hope Apple releases a fix for Lion or somebody makes the 10.6.8Fix Lion compatible.

There are many fixes depending on what version you are.

I can confirm that the update works for me as well. I am using a late 2006 white iMac 24" C2D and upgraded from 10.6.7 to 10.6.8 using the new 10.6.8 v1.1 update that was found with software update and I can now successfully switch between encoded digital audio and analogue stereo audio.
