Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?

Hi everyone,

i have just upgrade my system to 10.6.8 and everything work fine except my audio thru optical output. I have pluged Logitech Z-5500 Digital to my MacBook Pro's optical sound output and my problem now is that, when i play some HD movie vith DolbyDigital AC3 ore DTS, it plays fine but when i stop watching movie and close VLC, no other sounds play.. no itunes, no standard stereo movies ect.. it plays only AC3 od DTS sound track.. so when i want to listen some music, i must restart MBP and it plays again everything until i open again movie with 5.1 track....

any solution to fix it?

thanks in advance

Thank you Clemus and PAPPL! Bought a new mac mini 2011 this week for use as a HTPC and couldn't understand what was happening to the sound when I switched from movie to movie in both Plex and XBMC. Was able to make the connection between stereo to DTS that was knocking it out. I was on the verge of returning the mini and sticking with my WD media player until I found this post. Your suggestions worked perfectly and now it all works as I'd hoped.

Now just to get the Harmony Remote to work the way I want and life will be good!

Thanks again.🙂

If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out http://miniharmony.blogspot.com/. He stopped updating before finishing his last FAQ but I found his tutorials to be extremely helpful when setting up my Harmony One for Plex / Boxee / XBMC on a my Mini

I applied 10.6.8 "supplementary update", surround and stereo sound working now BUT there is a big glitch in my speakers when switching stereo to surround. I put back Applehda.kext from 10.6.7 and now this is ok.

Applehda.kext 1.9.9f12 is the last working fine extension for me.

So the update not solved completly the surround sound problem on my system.

I'm using a Late 2010 MBP connected to a Pioneer reciever via HDMI from the MiniDisplayPort...

I fixed the issue in the past, and it's stayed fixed with 10.71... Tested in VLC and XBMC.... Both work great following the official patch, only difference is the AppleHDA.kext is now at 2.11 as expected with Lion...

Works great, glad Apple got around to fixing it!!!
