Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?

I dont want to have to go through the whole thing of re installing my mini to SL , then doing the update to 10.6.7,

especially if LION , is just round the corner ?

I too have problems after the 10.6.8 combo update. In the Sound pane of preferences, the mute button is checked but I can't uncheck it. Also the alert sounds are greyed out. I'm really losing my patience with Apple.....Is anyone out there experiencing the same problem?

most likly they wont even bother fixing it , with Lion a few weeks away ?

File the bug report here https://bugreport.apple.com, let apple engineers know. I read somewhere else that the same version of AppleHDA.kext(2.0.5) exists in Lion, so if they don't fix this, we will probably encounter the same problem in Lion.

also the AppleHDA.kext swap didnt work for me.

im having the same problem. i have the old appleHDA on my time machine, BUT when i restore it, i check the version number and its still the latest version, i have even deleted the new appleHDA and then import the old one and still it stays on the new one. any advice pleaseeee

Well as I reported before, I was having the problem as well but coming straight from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 I didn't have a backup copy of the AppleHDA.kext to go back to. I eventually restored to 10.5.8 from a TM backup and then went back up to 10.6.3 -> 10.6.7. All is well now but I went to try and report the problem through the link above and it says that I need an Apple Developer login to make bug reports. How are you guys putting in the report?

No, let's not. Reporting the same bug more than once is abuse of the privilege and won't cause it to be fixed any sooner. At most, it will cause Apple to restrict bug reporting to paid developer accounts, or to ignore reports from free accounts.

I disagree, I've never heard an Apple Engineer complain about too many bug reports. In fact the amount of duplicate reports indicates to them the severity of the issue and how widespread it is and moves it up the queue. The squeaky wheel and all that.
