Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?

Hi everyone,

i have just upgrade my system to 10.6.8 and everything work fine except my audio thru optical output. I have pluged Logitech Z-5500 Digital to my MacBook Pro's optical sound output and my problem now is that, when i play some HD movie vith DolbyDigital AC3 ore DTS, it plays fine but when i stop watching movie and close VLC, no other sounds play.. no itunes, no standard stereo movies ect.. it plays only AC3 od DTS sound track.. so when i want to listen some music, i must restart MBP and it plays again everything until i open again movie with 5.1 track....

any solution to fix it?

thanks in advance

I've got problems too.

I've got a cristal clear adaptor from 3.5'' to toslink, and i can hear my speakers do a toc-toc-toc every second, like a clock or a metronome, and i can see the light of the optical output turning on and off rhythmically too.

I'm going to try to restore the orginal kext from the 10.6 dvd. Since 10.6.1, every update brings me more and more problems in the audio of my non-pro macbook unibody

I replaced AppleHDA from Timemachine-Backup and now stereo is back.

But now Surround-AC3 is broken again in itunes, surround only working with original itunes-movies.

Another problem: no sound in itunes movies when subtitles are added.

Iphone, ipad, vlc... Is able to play subtitles but in itunes its

's broken and no sound too.

This AppleHDA seems to be buggy since Snow Leopard and itunes 10.

:(

If you reinstall MacOS (10.6.4 - mine is a MacPro Mid 2010) from DVD on the existing system you get the following results (your applications and data will remain on the system; you possibly will need to reinstall some applications, but the data is not touched):

1.) Install MacOS 10.6.4 from DVD and apply MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8 immediately:

1.1) after the installation from DVD with AppleHDA.kext v1.9.3f5 audio is stable

1.2) after the installation of MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8 audio has again frequent dropouts (AppleHDA.kext v2.0.5f13)

1.3) replacing AppleHDA.kext v2.0.5f13 with AppleHDA.kext v1.9.9f12 with "kextunload" & "kextutil" doesn't remove the audio dropouts

2.) Install MacOS 10.6.4 from DVD and apply MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.7 immediately:

2.1) after the installation from DVD with AppleHDA.kext v1.9.3f5 audio is stable

2.2) after the installation of MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.7 audio is stable (AppleHDA.kext v1.9.9f12)

I'm also having the same issue with a 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo Mini. I'm using a optical audio link to some speakers that have a optical input. After update to 10.6.8 the audio is now dropping out immediately. Only when I play something with a continous audio stream does it actually work. Short sounds like system alerts are not being output however. When I hook the same speakers via optical to my MacBook Pro (also running 10.6.8), everything works as expected.

Apple, fix this!

Add me to the list of users with the problem. Just updated my 2.16 C2D white iMac from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 and I am having the same problem where after playing any digital encoded audio and then trying to switch to an analogue stream I get nothing. The only thing that will solve it is a restart. I don't have a copy of the AppleHDA.kext file from 10.6.7 because I was never running that. I will try and re-install 10.6.3 and then go to 10.6.7 and see if that works for me.

Apple this is a definite bug in the update, please look into this asap!
