Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?

I use my Minimac like Media central with PLEX

After the upgrade to 10.6.8 I can only hear for movies with dolby audio

the stereo ones doesn't work anymore !!!

please HELP !

Same issue as well, unfortunately I don't have a backup of this AppleHDA.kext file 😟

On the minimac, where I upgrade to 10.6.8, don't have Time Machine Backup !

Can I use the kext picking it from the iMac that is still at 10.6.7 ?

I was having similar issues.

I found the Updater in HD/Library/Updates/zzz041-0374/MacOSXUpd10.6.8Patch.pkg

and I ran it again - everything is working properly so far!

Same issue there : no stereo sound via optical output on a Mac Mini 2009 (Dolby Surround works).

I tried replacing AppleHDA.kext with v1.9.9f12 [from OS X 10.6.7], using Kext Helper b7, but unfortunately it does not work in my case : after rebooting, the digital output option has disappeared from the Sound Control Panel, and I have no sound at all, either 5.1 or stereo.

Power off/on does not help either.

Had to reinstall AppleHDA.kext v2.0.5 to get at least 5.1 sound back.

Seems the only option to get stereo sound back is to reinstall 10.6.7 from scratch, since the 10.6.7 combo update cannot be applied on top of 10.6.8. What a pain...

yep, mine down aftyer running the update tonight....and found my Time Machine was "OFF"....great.

Can confirm, that v1.9.9f12 doesn't necessarily solve to problem:

... and still frequent dropouts ...

I dont have time machine and I cant roll back, any ideas as this is a right pain!!

Same issue here: MacBookPro, Headphones or external speaker does not work - even with restored AppleHDA Library.

Me too. Lost all audio devices where I restored AppleHDA.kext from Time Machine backup and had to reinstall the OS.

Same thing here. Runing HDMI out to my Denon amp. Auido cuts out every 3 or so seconds. Seems to be fine using the optical out to my Logitech computer speakers. Praying for a quick fix since i didnt have time machine on.

I don't have TM enabled on iMac, is it safe to use the older extension from TM backup on my MacBook?

Same issue here:

Mac mini (early 2009) with optical output to my receiver.

Initially (after reboot) stereo output is fine.

After playing a file (TV show bought in iTunes) with AC3, stereo output (anything: music from iTunes, system sounds) is silent. Playing another file with AC3 is fine.

All is OK again after reboot...

Replacing AppleHDA.kext works just fine for me!
