The iPhone "..." could not be synced because the sync session failed to start

I am trying to sync my iPhone 4 with iTunes and I receive this "The iPhone 'XYZ's iPhone' could not be synced because the sync session failed to start." I have synced this phone many times in the past without any issues and this error just started to occur. I have done all the usual: reset my phone settings, restarted my computer etc. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what I could do?

iPhone 4, Mac OS X (10.6.7), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

For reference, this is what I did;

* First I upgraded iTunes to beta2 and my phone stopped syncing with this error. Realized my mistake by reading this thread and removed iTunes beta2 (for some reason dragging to trash didn't do anything whatsoever so had to locate the folder and remove by entering my root password)

* Reinstalled iTunes beta 1 and synced/backed up my iPhone and iPad, no problems syncing so I knew I had an up to date backup.

* Upgraded iTunes to beta2 by just running the installer. Phone stopped syncing again, but I just ignored it this time.

* Restored the iPhone and iPad to iOS beta2 (ie not upgrade, I held down alt and pressed the restore button)

After that it went like a regular restore (ie it factory reset, read the backups back and synced my apps just fine) and both iPhone and iPad now seem to be syncing happily over WiFi.

Ok, so it seems like some people are having this problem and some aren't. We should find something that we (the people still having issues syncing) have in common. Did everyone here have an almost completely filled up device before trying to upgrade? It could be that this software update added bulk and there's just not enough space.

the idea is good, but i really can't find anything to start with ... to answer your question: my iPhone was only half way filled.

also i have tested with MAC OS X 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 ... there's no difference.

i re-installed iTunes ... no difference.

tried syncing over the air and via usb ... no difference.

however my iPad 1 with firmware 4.3.3 syncs just fine on iTunes 10.5 beta 2 😕

any other clues?

I forgot to update to iTunes 10.5 beta 2 in the first place. My iPhone 4 iOS5 beta 1 can sync and update to 5.0 beta 2 just fine. But after the update, it won't sync at all.

So I updated to iTunes 10.5 beta 2 and sync the iPhone 4, everything work flawlessly.

But not with my iPad 5.0 beta 1, I got the same error message as yours. It won't sync at all.

I try to backup everything before the update. So I won't destroy my game save files.

Here is what I did

1. I uninstalled iTune 10.5 beta 2 by dragging it to the trash and enter my password. Empty the trash. iTunes Helper popup might appear, kill that process.

2. Install iTunes 10.5 beta 1 then sync and backup.

3. Install iTunes 10.5 beta 2 and Option+Restore the iOS 5.0 beta 2 firmware

If same error appeared again, redo (1.) and then install 10.5 beta 2 again.

4. Restore from backup you just created.

🙂

i couldn't resist trying if i can sync on itunes 10.5 beta 2 after the sync in beta 1 ... and sadly this is not working. now i'm back on itunes beta 1 and iOS 5 beta 2 with sync working. if someone has a better solution, then please post ... i tell you exactly what i've done now and then i'm out for the moment 😉

don't know which steps are actually important, but this is everything i've done:

  1. install mac os x 10.6.8
  2. (if you're on iTunes beta 2) kill the iTunes and iTunes Helper processes
  3. deinstall itunes beta 2
  4. install itunes beta 1 and start it
  5. connect your iDevice
  6. sync it (should work now)

i follow this step for restore a device with b1 for upgrade to b2:

NOTE: i've used two macs, the first (imac) with itunes 10.5 b1 and the second (macbook) whit itunes 10.5 b2

1- on imac, i synced and i did a full backup of my device, do it twice for security

2- i pluged the device to macbook and restore (option+restore) with b2

3- just after the device's reboot, i've pluged this device to imac

4- follow the step for restore from previus backup

for me, work for all device and i hope this is usefull for you...
