The iPhone "..." could not be synced because the sync session failed to start

I am trying to sync my iPhone 4 with iTunes and I receive this "The iPhone 'XYZ's iPhone' could not be synced because the sync session failed to start." I have synced this phone many times in the past without any issues and this error just started to occur. I have done all the usual: reset my phone settings, restarted my computer etc. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what I could do?

iPhone 4, Mac OS X (10.6.7), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

i found the reason, why my iTunes resisted to sync ... and to be honest, it's a little bit embarrasing 😮

i was looking at an article of what's been found new in the iOS beta 2 and there was a new iCloud logo, but i thought i'd remembered no difference to the old one in beta 1. so i looked at my iPhone and yeah ... there was no new logo. so i looked up the build nr. of the firmware and it was beta 1. the thing is, i got my firmware from a public site and not from apple directly. maybe that's causing your problems, too!?

iOS 5 beta 1 build is 9A5220p

iOS 5 beta 2 build is 9A5248d

look it up on your iPhone: settings > general > about > version

embarrassing for me too. Because of network failure my Itunes library did reset to my empty local music library instead of my server library and as I was syncing new songs from my server library of course the system got stuck.

Probably most people will suffer something else with syncing problems but perhaps this will help a few.

Nevertheless the reconciliation message from Itunes when it got stuck, is not very clear. Maybe a little addition would help like ' sync data not available'.

Since the most asked question here seems to be where to find beta1 of iTunes 10.5, here are the links;

iTunes 10.5 beta 1 for Mac

http://adcdownload.apple.com/ios/itunes_10.5_beta/itunes_10.5_beta__mac.dmg

iTunes 10.5 beta 1 for Windows x86

http://adcdownload.apple.com/ios/itunes_10.5_beta/itunes_10.5_beta__windows.zip

iTunes 10.5 beta 1 for Windows x64

http://adcdownload.apple.com/ios/itunes_10.5_beta/itunes_10.5_beta__windows_64.z ip

If you don't have an ADC account, these links won't work, but I post them since they're not easy to find despite having one :-/

EASY SOLUTION WITH iTunes 10.5b2 without reinstalling iTunes

1) Back it up

Backup your ipad or iphone. iTunes 10.5b2 can't sync but it can make a backup of the devices

2) Put it in Recovery mode

First, ensure that your computer is on and iTunes is running and your device is plugged in

Next, power off your phone/ipad by holding down the SLEEP button on top of the unit until the power off slider pops up. Slide your finger across the power off slider.

Next, Hold both the SLEEP and HOME buttons down for 10 seconds, then release the SLEEP button, but hold the HOME button for 10 more seconds. Your iPhone will have a blank screen, but should be in DFU (recovery) mode.

2) Restore with beta 2 Firmware

Push down CMD (Shift in windows) while pushing Restore in itunes and Finder (Explorer in windows) will pop up, find your beta 2 firmware and restore without any errors.

3) getting back your settings.

Choose to restore from the backup you made in Step 1 after it has finished installing.

Let me know if it works! worked for me 🙂

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for your post. Also, if anyone else could assist me in this procedure, I would greatly appreciate it.

My devices: iPad 2 (Verizon 3G CDMA) & iPhone 4 (AT&T GSM)

iTunes - 10.5 beta 2

iOS versions: iPhone = iOS 5 beta 1 / iPad = iOS 5 beta 2

What I am trying to accomplish is to succcessfuly upgrade my iPhone 4 (without losing ANY data) to iOS 5 beta 2. I already lost my entire backup from my iPad with a process, and I cannot afford to run into problems with the iPhone.

Can anyone positively confirm a way to do this? Again, I appreciate it!

To do this, you need to first plug your iPhone in to your computer via the iPhone USB. You’ll now see your iTunes pick up your iPhone and it’ll be listed under “Devices” on the left hand side of iTunes.

Right click on your iPhone -> click “Backup”

This will download a backup of your iPhone, to include apps, contacts, etc… so it’s well worth the time to do this each time you are going to make updates or iOS changes to your iPhone.
