Try Option-Shift-/
Hi, I know this post was a long time ago but I have just spent ages looking and reading all these posts. I hope this will help anyone getting to this stage that still has no joy! I have to use Function and the backslash key above the return key. (This does not work in Parallels though)

Are you using a MacBook Pro with a Belgian or French AZERTY keyboard? Do you really not get \ by doing option/alt + shift + : ? What do you get instead when you do that?
ALT + SHIFT + 7 (where slash is located) = \ (backslash)
I explained in one post "how to see various keys mapping in your MacOS" please follow the post (this will work for any keyboard format 😉).

And my hit and trial method (which was oldest post and someone posted it here but now shifted to devgeek.co 😀)

Hope it may help!

Shift + Alt + : works, but you need to use the Alt on the right of the space bar for some stupid reason...

What is your active keyboard layout? French? Something else?
On the Apple French AZERTY keyboard, \ is alt + shift + :
Found something that might be helpful:

Basically changing the keyboard to American, and swapping round some shortcuts.
Don't feel bad we all have computer problems sometimes, the key is right above the Return (or Enter) key.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply, Stedman, but NO WAY !
This is really frustrating.
Thanks anyway.
Jean
Hi: For clarification. Is it a Canadian French or France French keyboard?
Stedman
I would get an external keyboard if I were you, to make things a little less difficult. 😉
Hi Stedman,
I'm from Belgium, and the keyboard is know as a French keyboard.
But why are they diffrent ? French = French NO ?
Jean
Hi AussieDJ,
Its not abad idea, in fact !
But to me, backslash is much moe useful than the several stupid keys at the top, like the music keys and other keys ...

Try looking here.
Also for the meantime: System Preferences > Keyboard > Show Keyboard & Character Viewer in the menu bar.
Then go to the new icon in right hand corner > Show Keyboard Viewer.
