which alternative to iWeb?

Having to advise an alternative to iWeb (we don't like it) to develop static pages (without database) which one would you recommend? Here some requirements:

- Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard, no Snow, no Lion)

- wysiwyg layout, but with the option to edit the code when required

- when required, possibility to edit the stylesheet (css)

- integrated upload of changes (via ftp) to the provider

- final result compatible for iPad (so, no Flash but rather HTML5)

- management of photo galleries

- not necessarily free, but fair price (so, no Adobe)

After some search, I think to consider one of this:

- Freeway : http://www.softpress.com/

- Sandvox : http://www.karelia.com/sandvox/

- RapidWeaver : http://www.realmacsoftware.com/

- Flux : http://www.theescapers.com/flux/

- Hype : http://tumultco.com/hype/

Your opinion?

Why do you need to find an alternative to iWeb?

It is MobileMe that is ceasing and NOT iWeb. iWeb is an app that you can still continue to use whatever happens to MobileMe. If you have Leopard it will continue to work fine for you.

So far I have looked at both RapidWeaver and Sandvox and I don't think much of them really. They are both template based with no room for manoevre and both have less control than iWeb gives you.

If I were you, I would stick with iWeb - there is no reason to change when it will still work and all you need do is upload your site to another server.

It is iWeb 08 that you have and not iWork - they are different things.

You can always upgrade to iWeb 09 by purchasing iLife 11, iWeb 09 is included in this or try and get a cut price copy of iLife 09 at Amazon.

Of course you can edit the code and css style sheets when you want to. Simply publish your site to a local folder and you will get all the html files and the css folders. All you then need do is open them with TextWrangler and you can edit them and then upload your site. If you are using iWeb 08, then you would have to do this anyway unless you are still publishing to MobileMe?

If you are uploading to a server, then with iWeb 08 you have no choice but to publish to a folder on your desktop.

Having said that, I have just had a look at Hype and it seems pretty good and quite a lot cheaper than the others. Have seen it in the MacApp store before and had not realised what it was, but will now investigate further.

LOL yes sorry, I have iWeb'08 - I know they are different things : - )

iLife'11 requires MacOS 10.6 (Snow), and as I wrote, my first requirement is 10.5 (Leo), so it's not an option.

LOL sure I know I can change the source once published to a folder, but iWeb will not consider this changes in the next work session! So sorry, this is NOT what I ask.

About Hype, yes, it could be my choice..

Sandvox does not allow designing from blank page, only from templates. Seems like Freeway is the way to go for me. It allows all the drag-and-drop creativity I need for my 8 iWebsites. I look forward to designing my site #9 with Freeway....Fun! However, Apple has not announced the death of iWeb, only MobileMe, so I will wait to decide what to do with my 8 finished sites.

Thank you Roddy. But I don't understand what you say about the price difference.

MacFlux is sold by macwareinc.com (a reseller) at $99.99, while

Flux is sold by theescapers.com (the software house) at £69.99 ($111.69) or Family License at £99.99 ($159.56).

By the reseller is 10$ cheaper, not by the second, but I think I will anyway buy the Family License by the software house, if I will opt for this tool after the trial month, and then teach my daughters how to use it : - )

Btw, I have html and css and javascript and sql and php and java (jsp) knowledges, I normally write web pages with... vi, the unix editor : - )

Looking at MacFlux, I see that you can import iWeb sites and start working. Amazing. I had imagined that eventually someone would develop this, but MacFlux does it already! Does it work?

From MacFlux website: "Import a website: Already have a website? Import an existing website or iWeb site into MacFlux to instantly begin working with it."
