Hmmm, try booting up holding the Mouse button down at the same time as holding the Option/alt key down, see if inserting the Install Disc then clicking the 3/4 circle in Startup Manager & see if the Install Disc becomes a boot choice.
Does it read other DVDs OK?
Yes, it reads other DVDs just fine. I tried booting while holding mouse / option key down, I inserted the disc, and it did the same thing, nothing really happened, and it spit it out.
Make sure your Mac meets Snow Leopard's minimum requirements.
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard - Technical Specifications
Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
If you didn't verify and repair the startup disk if necessary before trying to install SL, try that.
Yes, I meet all of the minimum requirements.
Under the disk utility, I cannot click "repair disk" no matter what disk I have selected. I can verify and repair permissions, and I can verify disk, but not repair disk.
Hmmm, bad Disc??? Do you have another mac to try the Disc in, or an Apple Store near by to try it in?
I will try that.
Okay, I tried it in another MacBook Pro, and it worked, so it's not a bad disk. My macbook pro runs other disks, and the disk I have is not bad, any other ideas? I still can't "repair disk" in the disk utility, anybody have any ideas as to why not??
You need a Firewire cable, (9 pin<->9pin/FW800) & put the Install Disc in the other MBP, boot the other MBP in to FireWire target disk mode...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot this one that won't read/use the Disc while holding the Option/alt key down, that should bring up Startup Manager that should shoe the Install Disc in the other MBP as a boot choice.
Before reparing disk, make sure your data is backed up*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Repair Disk can only be done when you boot from the installer CD, and use the Installer's Utility Menu Disk Utility. You can optionally boot with command-S keyboard shortcut and type at the prompt:
/sbin/fsck -fy
and repeat until it repairs. If it can't repair you may need to purchase Alsoft Disk Warrior. If it repairs, follow by a:
/sbin/mount -uw
and then type:
exit
Let us know how far you get.
When it says that my volume "appears to be OK" is that anything similar to being repaired?
Or that it didn't/doesn't need repair.
Okay, so I have another MBP. I have the install disk in it. I have it set up at the target disk. My MBP recognized it, and the SnowLeopard install disk appeared on my MBP. I clicked to install it, and it asked to reboot to install, I did so, and my MBP was stuck with the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel....does it take a while to reboot?
Shouldn't be all that long methinks.
But did you boot this one wirh the Optrion/alt key held down to chooze the Install Disc in the other one as the boot choice... I don't think how yopu're doing it will work unless you set it in System Preferences>Startup Disk.
Okay, so I want to make sure everything is clear here. My MBP (#1) will not run the new install disk. I have another MBP (#2) that will run it, indicating that the disk works fine. I have a firewire cable between the two. I set #2 into target disk mode. It has the install disk in it. When i turn on #1 and hold alt/option, I can select MBP #2 HD, the snow leopard install disk, or MBP #1 HD. From #1, I selected to boot the install disk. I then get the grey screen with apple logo and the spinning wheel. Last time I tried, it was up for a good 25 min. Ideas?
OK, that should work.
How much RAM does MBP#1 have? 10.6 needs at least 1 GB of RAM, 10.5 needed 512 MB, Tiger only 256MB, though more is better for all of them.
