How to change iCloud email address?

I entered a test address when setting up iCloud, but now cannot find out how to change this to the email I would like with the @me.com ending. Any ideas?

A quick summary:

This threat is about: "How to change iCloud email address?"

  1. I understand that creating a new Apple-ID is NOT an answer to the question of this threat.
  2. This threat is NOT about "Where do I find my iColud @me.com email address on my iPhone.
  3. To this date, there is NO solution found. In other words: When using the same Apple-ID, NO ONE has been able to change his/her iCloud email address so far...

Once you have created an iCloud account and chosen an @icloud.com address to go with it you can't change the address (short of creating an entirely new account).

However, all is not lost. You can add up to three 'email aliases' - these are additional addresses (not accounts) which deliver into the same inbox as the main account. (In fact it's a good idea to give out alias addresses, rather than the main address, because if they attract spam you can easily change them.) (New aliases can only be @icloud.com ones; @me.com addresses cannot now be created.)

You should be aware before you start that once you've created an alias you cannot turn that address into a full iCloud account or move it to another account.

You can make the iCloud address the ID/sign in for iCloud when you first create the iCloud account (though if you already have an iCloud account using a non-Apple email address as the ID you can't change the ID toe the iCloud address). Please see Imp68's post here:

Re: I wish to transfer my Apple ID to a new iCloud account

As you apparently don't have an Apple ID you can do this as described. However it's most important that you also create a 'rescue' address in the Apple ID settings at http://appleid.apple.com because, for example, if you forgot your password and wished to reset it the new password would otherwise be sent to the iCloud address - which you wouldn't be able to access.

The answer to this has been posted several times on this thread:

1. Go to Manage your Apple ID and EDIT your current Apple ID to the old email address. This is temporary! DO NOT VERIFY IT. Do not change the password: Apple - My Apple ID

2. Go to your device where the old email address is still signed onto iCloud - Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom, and Sign Out/Delete the iCloud account - follow the prompts and type in your current password when asked.

3. Go back to Manage your Apple ID, sign on with the old ID and current password, and EDIT the Apple ID back to the new email address (you may have to verify it again).

4. Go back to Settings>iCloud and sign on with your new Apple ID

If you are indicating that you created a brand new Apple ID a year ago, rather than simply changing your existing ID, then the old Apple ID still exists. In that case you will need to go to Manage your Apple ID and click on RESET PASSWORD for that old Apple ID. If you cannot remember the Security Questions then you will have to contact Apple Support to have them reset so you can reset your password and remove the old iCloud account:

We cannot help you to remember only something that you would know. Go to: FORGOT APPLE ID to try to retrieve your iCloud ID. Your iCloud ID is an email address - likely your Apple ID email address.

If you do not remember the password, then once you retrieve the ID, go to: Apple - My Apple ID to reset the password. If you don't remember the answers to your Security Questions, contact ACCOUNT SECURITY SUPPORT to get a reset link sent to you.

You are going to have to remember your iCloud email address. There is nothing we can do here to help you to do that.

Best of luck,

GB

Short of changing to a new Apple ID and iCloud account your only option is to set up an email alias, which is an additional address (not account), then set up a Rule sending all messages to the original address to the Trash. Information on aliases here: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mm6b1a490a ; to set up a Rule click the cogwheel icon at bottom left of the Mail page at icloud.com and choose 'Rules'.

Apple is the only one who can fix this issue. There is nothing we can do on our end besides rule and alias work arounds. However, Apple may fix this issue if enough people report it to them directly. You can submit feedback on iCloud here. Make sure you select mail under "Feedback Type". Tell Apple you should be able to change your primary @iCloud/@me email address and then talk about your specific case.

This does work perfectly:

cristianfrombucuresti wrote:

So you have to delete your iCloud account from the iPhone, select to keep the information on phone, or whatever, then create it back with the @me.com email you want to use.

ON YOUR PHONE or ipad:

1. Go to settings/mail

2. open icloud

3. click delete acount

4. select keep information on phone

5. delete

6. scroll to add new account

  • choose icloud
  • enter the correct email address
  • save

this allows you to have the correct icloud email address and preserve your separate apple id

I don't think everyone is discussing the same thing here and I'm sure many of us just want to clear this out.

  1. I created my apple ID long time ago with, let's say firstATgmail.com.
  2. Apple then created an iCloud email account for me, called firstATicloud.com.
  3. To login on iTunes, iCloud etc. I use my Apple ID (firstATgmail.com). If I want to check mails, I can either go to Google as I've always done or to my other iCloud account that Apple created for me.
  4. It's quite easy to change my Apple ID to whatever I want, and also to add additional email addresses or recovery email address. So now I want to change my Apple ID to secondATgmail.com, piece a cake!
  5. BUT, I also want to add/change the iCloud email address. I want to be able to receive emails to secondATicloud.com, without creating a new Apple ID.
  6. Is this what your solution does "gail from maine"?

That's correct: you can't. The thread you linked to is long and acrimonious but changes nothing. I'm sorry, but what you want to do is simply not possible.

Just to clarify (though it's probably been said already - I'm not going to read through 28 pages to find out!)

  • If your Apple ID/login is a non-Apple email address (i.e.not @mac.com. @me.com or @icloud.com) you can change it to another non-Apple address which has never been associated with an Apple ID.
  • If your Apple ID/login is a non-Apple email address you cannot changed it to the associated Apple (iCloud) address.
  • If your Apple ID/login is an Apple email address you cannot change it.

Hi digitalkl,

If you have an @me.com address that has the exact same prefix as your @iCloud.com address, then those are one in the same, not separate accounts.

Your iCloud account is set up using an Apple ID - it is not an ID in and of itself. Once you set up the iCloud account using that Apple ID (i.e., minion@gmail.com), it then has a corresponding minion@iCloud.com address that is automatically set up as a part of the iCloud account.

When you set up your iCloud account using the @gmail.com Apple ID, it created the @iCloud.com address as an Alternate address on your @gmail.com account:

User uploaded file

If you go to Manage your Apple ID, and sign on with your @gmail Apple ID, you should be able to see that minion@iCloud.com Alternate address. If you sign on with your @me.com Apple ID, you should be able to see the corresponding @icloud.com Alternate email address there for that Apple ID: Apple - My Apple ID

Check them both and let me know what you see. Once you have determined how your two Apple IDs and iCloud accounts are set up, you can let me know what it is you'd like to do, and I will work with you to try to achieve that goal.

Cheers,

GB

You are right, Matt's does not work. You can delete the account, but when you try to log back in with your old Apple ID, it just brings that same mistyped email address back under the Advanced, then Mail settings of the iCloud Account. I finally just set it up as a new Apple ID, but this will cause issues downt he road I am sure, unless they let you merge two or more Apple ID's. Thanks anyway for trying Matt.

Oct 13, 2011 2:30 PM in response to Highlordkram

Lodragons,

Did you actually try this? Because when I have tried this it merely severes the connection with the icloud servers. After deleting and when i return to icloud settings to redo..... the previously entered email address is still saved with my AppleID. Under the icloud account information the email address prevously entered is locked in with no option for edit. It apears that the email address is saved on their servers with no option for adjustment by the end user.
