Macbook Pro Screen Backlight

I have a macbook pro i7 17inch mid 2010 model. 10.6.8 I dim my screen all the way down (backlight off) then it brightens by itself and when i press a key or the pad the screen turns off. recently this has started and gets annoying because i leave downloads going or sometimes on and when i come back the screen is on the screensaver and when i perform the actions stated above the screen backlight turn off.

MBP 17" i7, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Sorry you're having the issue. Here's a suggestion:

If your preferences aren't set to auto adjust the brightness and you've tried the PRAM reset and even reset the SMC (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) and used the flashlight, yet the problem persists, try creating a new user to see whether or not the same thing happens.

If it doesn't happen in the other account then it could be some user-specific configuration in the software that is causing the problem. If it does, however, I'd say back up your stuff and talk to the folks at Apple to make sure you don't have either a possible problem with a video cable or perhaps the display itself (hard to say at this point). They should be able to diagnose the root cause of the issue.

I can confirm that it is a software issue. I backed installed a clean version of sl with 10.6.7 and once I update to 10.6.8 the problem comes back. I have reset the pram and smc same thing. Console logs don't show anything. Now instead of dimming down the backlight to off I let the Mac shut off the display and the problem does duplicate.

I am glad to know I am not the only one having this problem. I turn the brightness level off on my computer so I can sleep at night and it keeps brightening itself back up. Very frustrating. I turned off automatic brightness of the screen and it didn't solve the problem either.

I have a mid-2010 15 inch and I recently updated software and it began happening. Other possibilities: I recently plugged a mini-display port to HDMI adapter into my computer, utilizing the port for the first time, but it's no longer plugged in. I also utilize Time Machine with an external hard drive and tried unplugging that with no results.

Please someone figure it out...

Hey there,

I can verify this issue. The same thing is happening to me.

2.53 GHz 15" 2010 MBP, 4GB RAM, Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

I leave my laptop on and open sometimes at night so I can finish downloading something, and since I upgraded to 10.6.8 the computer periodically turns the brightness up from 0-1 notch.

I'm repairing permissions now, and I will let you know what happens (it will take a while) but I have a feeling that it won't help.

Thanks for the help everyone.
