Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

How do I 'buy' Quicktime Pro?

I am new to Mac and trying to set up the new Mac for Video Editing.

I tried buying Quicktime from the Apple site - but it wont accept my Australian phone number, I tried everything but it would not take my money. Finally I called some friends and they said it was because of different pricing arrangements and said I had to load my software from the Australian shop. What the? - so instead of paying $29, I went to the Australian online shop - which charges $49. Ok, I got over that after some ranting.

Then it says when I 'buy' it, it will send me a password to enter into Quicktime 7 Preferences - but First it says I need to download Quicktime 7. So I did that, but it refuses to load this, as the Mac says to me that there is ALREADY Quicktime X loaded on my machine. So I look - and yes I have Quicktime 10.

So if I have ten and I cant get 7, how do I upgrade to Pro?

The entire object is to set up Final Cut Pro - however I need to convert all the other types of movies that FCP cant handle. And I am led to believe Quicktime PRO 7 does that to at least some of the videos I have.

I have heaps I need to use - and they are

.3gp

.avi (which I want to use Quicktime Pro to convert)

.DIF

.flv

.mpg

.mpeg

.m2v

.mp4

.mov

.wmv

But - to start with - how do I get PRO to load?

You're Welcome... Sorry it didn't help...

I take you have telephoned AppleCare...

They Helped me solve my QT7 Pro Issue when I first got my 27" iMac... (Logic Pro User)...

Unfortunately I can't Recall the Process...

I just rang AppleCare, Said I was a Logic Pro User and was immediately Transferred to a Professional Apps Consultant...

Anyway, Good Luck with it all...

In the Apple Store it says I havent bought anything - so I cant get any passcodes to Pro. The App store says I have bought it so cant download it again, cant reload it because its already there. Around and around I go and whether I will get QT Pro - nobody knows....

Problem may be one of waiting for the "iCloud" implementation and AppStore application software updates. Basically, here is my take on the situation. Few people would opt to make purchases of software they cannot back up or re-install on re-initialized or newly purchased "devices." To get around this, Apple plans to allocate this function to the iCloud and iCloud aware software in the following manner:

1) Computer platforms will be "demoted" to the status of just being a "device" like the iPhone or iPad.

2) The iCloud version of the AppStore application will have the capability of tracking all purchases and have a special button for the downloading of an app not currently on a particular "device."

3) ASSUMPTION: since any app can currently be deleted from/restored to a "device", this implies an app can be removed and re-installed on a "device" in the future via the iCloud.

4) Multiplicity of app use/installation will be free and is a built-in function of the AppStore-iCloud interface/rules.

To support this thinking, I have extracted and joined a few video snippets from the recent Apple Keynote Address:

KEYNOTE EXTRACTS

Of course, only time will tell if these assumptions are correct.

Unfortunately, since the major components of the old FCP "Suite" package are now being sold separately (e.g., Motion and Compressor), it is becoming increasingly probable that the QT 7 "Pro" key will also fall into this category. My personal advice would be to contact Customer service for your local online Apple Store and ask them directly if a "Pro" key is included with the purchase of FCE X so you can move on. (My guess is they won't know and will actually have to research the matter before getting back to you with a final answer to this question.)
