When I plug in any of my cameras or other devices, they all show up as a drive in finder, except for my Nikon Coolpix P7000 camera. Only Aperture and iPhoto can see the files on it. If I shoot a movie on it, I can't get it into iMovie or FCE without first copying it from iPhoto.
Anyway to make this camera show up as a drive so that I can move and copy its files directly without using a card reader?
If it is possible, the camera's manual will tell you how to set the camera to Mass Storage mode. But recent Nikon cameras do not have this mode. Like most modern cameras, it uses Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP), which gives more control over the camera (possibly including tethered shooting). But in that mode, the camera is not a "drive", and will not mount like one. You can access the files with Image Capture, iPhoto, Aperture, or Nikon Transfer, but not the Finder. Or better... use a card reader. It is usually faster, and you will have Finder access.
Thanks, I was hoping that wasn't the case, but . . . I do't recall seeing any mass storage mode as I've been all through the menu, but I'll take another look just in case.
I'll be stuck with the card reader then as frankly, I'm happier with the K.I.S.S. principle -- show it as a drive and let me decide what to do.
My Nikon D7000 does'nt either and I believe this a good idea of Nikons's since I don't have to eject it saving me the expense of ruining the memory in it. Mac's don't like it if you don't eject mounted drives especially HD's that might have just done a TimeMachine backup. Rather Nikon loads their software when it senses one of their camera's and you can pick and choose what photo's you want to move to the computer.
Ya, but I'm an old fart who started his IT life with Fortran, punch cards and IBM 3270s, so software that removes functionality to protect me from my stupidity, doesn't rank high on my list. As a consequence, now I have to remove the card and stick it in a card reader to do what I need to do. Retrograde design work IMHO. The camera can produce a movie, but there's no way to import the movie directly with iMovie or FCE because those softwares can't see it. That's a DUH! in my book.
I'm not going to ask how old.
I have a P300 as well as the D7000 that shot movies and I just import it from the camera to a folder of my choosing and then open up the app that I want to import it to, since there are a few apps out there you could use,Nikon included.
You should'nt have to remove the card since I use a USB cable on both mine.
Times change fast with computers and hardware. Gotta keep up or you get left behind.

Unless someone can enlighten me as to how, I can't do this with a P7000 as it doesn't show up in Finder, therefore no way to drag and drop to a folder or import. Aperture and iPhoto seem to be the only options in Apple software. FCE and iMovie don't see the camera. Finder doesn't see the camera.
Did you install the software that came with the P7000?
The short answer is no and we shouldn't have to either.
I've had Canon, Pentax, Olympus and Nikon software and all of them just fill up the HDD with useless (insert expletive here). If the OS can see the camera and load the drivers, that should be enough.
Don't know what else to tell you, unless someone with more expertise than you or me can explain a work-a-round for your problem.
