Sony SLT-A55

I'm considering buying the Sony SLT-A55 but before laying down a big chunk o' change, I wanted to know if it will play well w/ my Mac. I have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.6, iMovie '09 8.0.6, iPhoto '09 8.1.2, and iDVD 7.0.4. Can this version of iMovie import video directly from this camera or from an SD card if I shoot in 1080p AVCHD? What about iPhoto and importing stills, any problem here? I thought I read that if I shoot RAW that this camera can't use Mac software for editing. And putting everything together, will the movies in HD be usable in iDVD along with a chapter for a still photos slideshow? I know it's a lot to answer, but my current digital camera is dead and I have a trip planned for this week that I want to bring the new camera on. Decided to choose a DSLR that can shoot video so I can leave my mini DV (tape) camcorder at home and use just one camera for everything. I like the Sony for features and price, but if it is not as simple as just connecting and importing into iMovie/Photo, then I'll have to get something else. Possibly the Canon EOS Rebel T3i. Any thoughts?

I have the Sony Alpha 33, the junior version of your SLT-55, and my 33 works great with my Mac. I just plug the SD card into the built-in reader, and iMovie picks it up well.

I do use Aperture, and it reads the raw photos fine.

The movies will be useful in iDVD, but of course iDVD won't be able to put out anything but SD.

By the way, I would really suggest considering upgrading to iMovie 11, as it has wonderful audio editing capabilities.

I love the Alpha 33 for video, but am mindful that it will only shoot for 30 minutes, then shut off. I think quickly turn the movie function on again, and it will tape for about 15 more minutes before shutting off because of heat.

I had the Canon T1i, but sold it because I was tired of carrying all that weight.

Thanks, Hugh. Off to Best Buy this PM. I will take the advice and upgrade iMovie. Just haven't needed until now. I knew about overheating/possible damage to sensor, but most of my video I shoot these days is just 1-15 second clips rather than continuous filming so I don't think I'll have a problem. By the way, what SD cards are you using and what format for video? Didn't realize IDVD only used SD.

I use a class 6 sdhc card, and it works fine.

As far as I know, movie requires class 6 or better.

The rumors are that Sony will be coming out with a Alpha 77 in July or later. It is supposed to be a really nice, though more expensive camera. Put Sony Alpha 77 in google and check what they are saying.

One could never go wrong with the 55 of course. I am sticking with the 33 because it is perfect for me. I added Sony's exterior mic to make sound a little better.

Picked it up at BB today. Sale price $799, but I had a coupon for 10% off. Couldn't use it on sale items, but they would apply it to the non-sale price, $850, so I got it for $765. Picked up a SanDisk Extreme Pro 16GB and got 20% off since I bought the camera, too. Big chunk o' change, but still not a bad deal. Don't know what a class 6 card is but this says UHC Speed Class 1. Is that what you were referring to? Charging battery now while I read manual and try to learn how to use it. I'll shoot some test footage and see how the import goes. And thanks for the tip about using the built-in SD card reader on the Mac. Had it for 2 years and never knew it was there! Plugged in a card from one of my kid's camera, and bingo. I had even bought a tiny USB card reader for those few times I imported their pics. Thanks again. I'll post the results of my experiments later.

I had to check what that card is. Wow, that is going to be one heck of a card. Just for the record, one can use sdhc cards, and they come a lot cheaper if you look for another. The card below will work ok, but I suspect a pro would really love the card you did buy.

Hope you like your camera as much as I like my alpha 33. Hugh

OK, played around a little but still confused. I'm OK getting the stills off the card, but I can't figure out how to import video. Here is the directory of my card:

User uploaded file

Here is the directory with all folders opened:

User uploaded file

I thought the video was supposed to be in the MP_ROOT folder but there is nothing there. The DCIM holder has the stills. I shot 2 video clips, each no more than 10 seconds. I can't get anything to play nor can I import anything into iMovie (iMovie>File>Import>Movies then tried selecting all the folders and all the files one at a time and got nothing that iMovie could open). Tried opening all the files w/ QuickTime, nothing doing. I did double click on the files w/ the .BDM extension and when they wouldn't open, the dialog box asked which app to use to open them and I chose QuickTime. That's why the file type says QuickTime Player Document.

What do I do now? Going to reformat the card and delete all the stuff and record some more so I might see where the video files are stashed. Any more help would be appreciated.

I did some further experimenting. Instead of removing the SD card and inserting it in the Mac's reader slot, I connected the camera to the Mac w/ the USB cable and opened iMovie. File>Import from camera, and my video clips appeared. Don't know why I couldn't pull them straight off the SD card, but at least I am able to get them into iMovie. I'm happy. Still would prefer to take them right off the card so I won't have to be tethered to the camera. If anyone can help me out, chime in. Thanks, Hugh. I think I made a good choice after reading your posts.

On my Sony, I can simply put the card into the card reader, tell iMovie 11 to import from camera, then the import window opens and I can go from there. The AVCHD files need to be dragged over in a group, and there is a lot of info on that in this discussion group, as lots of folks had trouble doing that. Best to let the computer do it.

Just for the heck of it, I just took 14 sec of video, put the card into the computer, and iMovie saw it immediately.

I don't remember if there was a problem with iMovie 09 until after its latest update.

Hugh: Maybe my mistake was because after plugging in the SD card and opening iMovie, I clicked File>Import From> and tried to select a folder or file from the SD card directory rather than From Camera. Maybe iMovie sees the card as the camera. I'll try again but if it doesn't import it straight from the card I'll just have to hook the camera up to the Mac and import it that way. Also need to upgrade iMovie. Many thanks for helping me with my purchase. Now I just have to learn how to use the camera. Alaskan cruise next week.
