I'm plugging my Canon powershot sd1200 into my Macbook Pro via a USB cable, but my computer is not recognizing the camera. I have restarted, but still not working.
Canon website says I don't need a driver for this. Any advice is appreciated!

Try this open iPhoto and go into the iPhoto preferences and click the general button and make sure the "Connecting camera opens:" is selected to iPhoto, then plug in your camera. Once you plug in your camera turn on the power button.
As Eric suggests, make sure you are powering the camera on once you've connected your camera to the MBP.
